I would like to request administrator status on the wikiversity project. I plan to be a major contributor to the site. My credentials are as follows : I have a degree from the University of London in Computer Engineering (1st Class Honours) and am about to commence a PhD which involves assisting Undergraduates and marking coursework.   • Comment - I would like to say that I appreciate your enthusiasm and would like to thank you for applying for adminship here. I would also like to point out that there is much you can do simply as a "registered user" here where your contributions will be taken seriously. The primary purposes of "adminship" is mainly a protection of the project against those who would do harm. Significant tools available for those with "sysop" status include user blocking, page protection, and page deletion/undeletion, all of which are mainly to stop those who would try to "vandalize" this project and add content that is decidedly inappropriate. Those individuals currently with this "privilege" are mainly those who have been involved with Wikiversity for some time and have been known among the organizers of Wikiversity. With one exception, everybody has also been an admin on other projects and brings considerable experience from the other Wikimedia projects to here as well. Hi :) I request Custodianship on Wikiversity. I have been on English Wikipedia for quite a while, and have around 1,500 edits. I have my own wiki that I mess with and test things on, so I am familiar with the tools. I have Vandalproof and Rollback priv's on english wp, so I am trustworthy. I would be happy to be under the full watch of a mentor or two, and am happy to learn new things.   • Comment: "Dealing justice" isn't what custodianship is about - or, even if it unfortunately turns out that way, it should not be someone's intention in becoming one. Hi all! I'm requesting custodianship on a temporary basis by means of the probationary period. I'm a sysop on the English Wikipedia and am well-versed in how to use the extra buttons. I haven't been very active at Wikiversity as of yet, but I love the concept and am eager to begin collaborating with other people in the pursuit of knowledge. I am requesting a mentorship for custodianship. I want to help with many of the custodian related tasks here on Wikiversity, as there aren't a whole lot here now, and I think I could be of help. Just to be clear, I do realize there is much I can help with without having sysop access, but I'm very familiar with the way MediaWiki works, and as such, this is my main interest here. Although I am not a sysop on any Wikimedia projects (yet), I have about 2800 edits on Wikipedia, where I contribute ALL over the place (see my userpage here). I have been all around Wikimedia for a couple years now, and I have the utmost interest in helping it achieve its full potential. As far as MediaWiki goes, the reason I understand it well is that I have helped develop php code for my own wikis and have taken the role of sysop/bureaucrat on a few others. Since I am requesting a mentorship for custodianship, I think that if chosen to be mentored, you will see the amount that I have to offer. Hello, I am a very experienced editor at wikiversity and I have had up to 6 months experience, being here since November. In this time, I have been very involved in the community creating many pages, often welcoming new users, and helping cleaning up vandalism on many occassions. I think I could do with the admin tools here as I am careful in what I am doing and I often avoid breaking rules and rushing in without thinking. Special:Contributions/Student Galaxy frankly (in my opinion) does not indicate much "custodial" type of activity, but this should not exclude your nomination as a probationary custodian. My hope is that your editing activities will grow to include a bit more Wikiversity:Maintenance and get more "maturity" as an editor of learning resources. I request the "no big deal" of sysop status. I am a seasoned editor over at the English Wikipedia, and enjoy taking part in behind-the-scenes housekeeping tasks. Granted I'm brand-spanking new here (however I've done a fair bit of reading), but I would like to put the custodian buttons to good use in the running this wiki, and my mop would be used as a mop, not as an accompaniment to subject matter edits. I intend to help out with any tasks needing custodian action, especially things like setting up new initiatives and projects, as I have done on Wikipedia. Hi OpenSource lovers! I am here to kindly request the role of custodian... I have been using wiki-related services for about 5 years. I have at my disposal many papers that I have written from my research that have piled up. I haven't had the nerve to publish my papers until now. I hope Wikiversity will give me a chance.

Hi Victor, Sounds like we could really do with you around here! Lots of possibilities. Custodianship I would think sounds very much within your grasp, but you would be well advised I think to plough ahead with editing, develop your user page, build your edit history, participate, create some learning resources, and start publishing your papers (we really need more of this!). And delve into Wikiversity, what it is, how it works, etc. This will help you to get to know the place while it gets to know you :). Then you would be well placed, I imagine, for custodianship. That could all happen quite fast, depending on you. We want custodians, but we are also wary of those who seek for fast 'status' without first some dedicated local apprenticeship. See Custodian and How to be a Wikimedia sysop for some more ideas. Also, feel free to discuss anything you like also at the Colloquium. I request adminship and sysop status. I was an early administrator on English Wikipedia[[w:User:Mirwin][[[w:User:Lazyquasar]]] until nonparticipation triggered reversion to regular user status. As http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/User:Lazyquasar at Wikibooks for the express purpose of participating with Wikiversity, I have been active in discussion and debate regarding Wikiversity on all applicable sites and the foundation mailing list. I have contributed a fair bit to the Engineering section at the Wikibooks prototype. I intend to be doing a fair amount of work with Wikiversity and feel I can be an efficient and fair administrator. I also have some interest in seeing Wikimedia ported to Java and interfaced to some distributed technologies. I owned/operated a computer consultanting firm for eight years and have a clear understanding of "first do no harm" when given access to mission critical servers. As owner it was my responsibility to train the systems analysts I dispatched to client site in the art of doing no harm that could not be repaired or recovered efficiently. --Mirwin

  • Support - Michael has been a very long-time supporter of Wikiversity during much of the phase while this project was before the WMF board of trustees, and has helped contribute a major portion of the content that is already here on this project as well even before en.wikiversity became live. I would love to see him become the first "official" admin (not done on a temp basis just to get thing going). He certainly understands the mission of Wikiversity and wants to make some very meaningful contributions, and would be very useful for the vandalism patrol as well. --Robert Horning 13:38, 18 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello everybody. Before all, I'm sorry for the english mistakes I could make, French is my native language. I wish I could have the Custodian rights on EN.WV. I recap my reasons, it's not for personal accomplishment :) :

  • There is an increasing amount of vandalism which is let daily on the main namespace (i.e : Drilling Engineering)
  • One more admin is worth it on a relatively new project like Wikiversity
  • This could help the collaboration between FR.WV and EN.WV.

Indeed, I'm a bureaucrat on FR.WV, and a regular contributor on it since december (opening of French version) with about 4K edits. I'm also sysop on FR.WB, and a regular user of FR.WP.

  • I note your comment about increasing vandalism. I wasn't aware that we have had increasing vandalism recently - indeed, the opposite. Keep in mind that I've done a couple hardblocks too, using CU data from wikibooks and the CU logs for Wikipedia... it's still fairly low-level, but definitely a growing problem.     It's less a question of volume than percentage of volume. Special:Statistics shows only about 4500 pages likely to be content. If you look at that and then look back on those logs (as well as reversions), it's actually not so tiny an issue. Also keep in mind that all wm projects tend to have less vandalism during late summer in the Northern Hemisphere, because the kids are mostly outdoors, rather than bored to death in the house. --SB_Johnny | PA! 18:03, 21 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi RM77. Though custodianship is "no big deal", I think you really need to learn how a project works before being helpful as a custodian. I know you're a very good user and I trust you based on your work on the French-language Wikiversity, but I agree you should wait before requesting custodian tools here. On a sidenote, I'd love to see more collaboration between fr.wikiversity and en.wikiversity, but you don't really need custodian tools to do that, do you? I agree, you should know the project better. E.g. I am custodian at the German wikiversity. So, one would think then it is about the same.   • The major method by which en-Wikiversity tries to lower the barrier to custodianship is by allowing existing custodians to mentor probationary custodians. If you can get one existing custodian to trust you and be your mentor, then you get a month with the admin tools and can then demonstrate to the rest of the community that you can be trusted.     I agree with you all, I think I asked Custodianship too early. Guillom, I'll make all my possible to divide my time between FR.WP and FR.WV, so that's why the collaboration between FR.WV and EN.WV is not that much advanced. I swear I make my possible :)
    If being a mentor is one of the way to get the Custodians tools, I will try it. I'm quite used with admin tools...

Hello everyone, I'm Ben and I would like to help out more at Wikiversity. So far during my short time here I've absorbed alot of the very accepting and friendly culture. Wikiversity isn't like Wikipedia, it's not screwed up and ultra structured - which goes against the wiki principle. Admittedly I'm not a brilliant content contributor but I have the willingness to help which I personally look for in terms of a sysop candidate.

Anyway, onto the nomination. I'm Pumpmeup pretty much everywhere, and a seasoned gnome (behind the scenes guy) on Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons (where I'm a trusted user). I intend to get started as a custodian everywhere I can - backlogs are my specialty! After the probationary period was up (or at least until I'm better known in the community and more acquainted with different ways of doing things) I would like to get into setting up the foundations (and new endeavors) for when the wiki hits its critical mass and then explodes in population, so we've got solid building blocks in place (in the form of specialized help pages, desks, policy, projects, etc). --Pumpmeup 12:11, 26 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
