[edit source]Self-Nomination
[edit source]After the recent posts in the colloquium, Wikiversity talk:List of custodian mentors, How to be a Wikimedia sysop I also apply for the bureaucrat tools.
Why the tools request ?
[edit source]- I believe that an additional pair of hands in usage of the tools at the moment would result in a better service quality for Wikiversity, see e.g.
- See also the colloquium about my comments about bureaucratship/custodianship being "no big deal".
What am I doing around Wikiversity ?
[edit source]For those of you who do not know me:
- recent contribution summary with other custodian mentors
- participating in the Thucydides: The Peloponnesian War reading group
- Composing free and open online educational resources: participating and also helping teachers/educators to get more comfortable around Wikiversity (if you see one of them, why don't you interact with them? But don't forget other newcomers !)
- blog on Wikiversity: User:Erkan Yilmaz/observations
- using actively IRC (Wikiversity:Chat)
- know the tools, since I am bureaucrat at German Wikiversity
- helping other Wikiversities: e.g. search for the term Greek here, betawikiversity:Wikiversity:IRC meetings, translations which must be finished so Turkish Wikiversity can be born, French Wikiversity, Italian WV
Wikiversity philosophy
[edit source]When I came to English Wikiversity, I learned something new: that Wikiversity is much more and different than what was being done at other wikimedia projects. Since then I changed my philosophy (see e.g. here or here) - thanks again to the mentoring of User:JWSchmidt. I am using Wikiversity also as my personal learning space (e.g. making my notes to Thucydides: The Peloponnesian War available on Wikiversity or de:Benutzer:Erkan Yilmaz/Asien)
Questions and requests
[edit source]- Erkan, how would you be able to cope with bot requests? What is your experience of dealing with such requests on the German Wikiversity? Thanks, Cormaggio talk 17:37, 15 March 2008 (UTC)
- We just have a request at German WV. I finalized today the final criteria for a bot approval after publishing the initial criteria for discussion back in October 2007. Since for the English Wikiversity we have already existing criteria: Wikiversity:Bots this can lead to a faster acceptance of bot status. Besides this I had in the past contact with bots (helping fixing a bot problem, intelligent bots?). For me the most important thing for a bot is, that the bot operator is always looking out for her bot's work, because a "bad" robot just troubles the Wikiversity users (e.g. Robert E.), ----Erkan Yilmaz Wikiversity:Chat 17:58, 15 March 2008 (UTC)
- Since the 9th February there is no response about this bot approval request: I have added a comment there
about what is missing at least from the so far stated basic criteria, so the bot owner knows about this and can improve this. Also I have added a reply for the 3-days old request here about what is missing at least from the so far stated basic criteria, so the bot owner knows about this and can improve this. Hope one of the b.cats can continue from there. ----Erkan Yilmaz Wikiversity:Chat 19:39, 15 March 2008 (UTC)

Comments
[edit source]- I support Erkan without reservation (i.e. this is not dependent on my question above). He's a great, dedicated, friendly and patient participant. :-) Cormaggio talk 17:37, 15 March 2008 (UTC)
- Oh, wow... absolutely :-). Erkan pretty much embodies the spirit of Wikiversity: committed to the cause, gentle and encouraging to new participants, and above all always remembers that it's supposed to be fun! --SB_Johnny | talk 18:35, 15 March 2008 (UTC)
- Support: dedicated contributer whose presence makes wikiversity a better place. --mikeu talk 01:19, 16 March 2008 (UTC)
- Strong support as per others. Especially as per SB_Johnny; Erkan is "gentle and encouraging to new participants" in quite admirable and creative ways. --Remi 19:38, 16 March 2008 (UTC)
- I was still a new user about 24 hours ago and Erkan found me, posted to my talk page, sent email, and got me going on IRC, then answered a bunch of questions, and all in all reached out in a very notable way. Looking over his pages, I notice a commitment to quality and an openess to other's ideas, and very good technical know-now. - -- Jtneill - Talk 10:29, 17 March 2008 (UTC)
- lucychili 17:13, 22 March 2008 (UTC) Thanks for help and patience. +1 on "gentle and encouraging to new participants"
