2nd welcome

[edit source]

Hi Gbaor. I've been watching your recent contributions and am very impressed by the work you are beginning to do for Wikiversity. So here's a second very warm welcome from me! -- McCormack 08:04, 20 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thank you! I think this is the best Wiki project so I plan to contribute as much as I can. --Gbaor 08:10, 20 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ditto. Glad you are here! However I am curious. Are you planning on tagging everything small or short as "stubs"? We tend to operate a little differently from Wikipedia. There are many types of learning resources that might remain relatively small yet complete. A stub label or category would be inappropriate for these resource modules. Mirwin 08:15, 20 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Just reviewed your user summary. SB_Johnny has a new project proposal under discussion at Colloquium (accessible from main menu on right) involving goats and medicine validation you may be interested in. Hope to soon you there soon. Mirwin 08:18, 20 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Stub templates were created that we can divide the topics somehow (something more specific than the "stub" label). At the first step stub types for major schools, according to Wikiversity:Schools were created. This page is not completely up to date however (Portal:Life Sciences is not listed at all). More info at: Wikiversity talk:Stub#Stub types
So.. To summarize it: With these stub types we can identify stubs for each portal, where they can be easily found and further improved.--Gbaor 08:29, 20 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

One more thing... I wanted to add the special stub template only for articles, which are already marked as stubs, whit the general {{Stub}} template. --Gbaor 09:58, 20 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

living on earth

[edit source]

Living on Earth is scheduled to visit Ladd Obs. on Tue. Feb. 5th. Not sure how long it will take to edit the interview and broadcast it, but I'll let you know. I will add a section at Radio Discussion when it is online. --mikeu talk 13:01, 31 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

ok I will definitely check it :) --Gbaor 13:20, 31 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Living on Earth pagemove

[edit source]

Hi Gboar,

Mike and I were chatting on IRC this morning trying to figure out the best way to keep all this organized. I moved what was on the main page to Radio Discussion/Living on Earth/2008.1.18, and we might end up making subpages for each segment (so they can be categorized, linked individually to other pages, etc.). Thanks for the work on the cloned animals segment! --SB_Johnny | talk 15:26, 31 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Just a small question about this... Where is the place we can discuss each topic? Under the "questions " section? Like here? This could be a good chance to pull some people over here to discuss (maybe even from WP), and it should be clear, where to leave comments. Controversial topics always attracts people, what is our advantage now :). These pages are meant as "standard" discussion pages about specified topics, right? --Gbaor 18:49, 1 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thank you. I will investigate and use those. --Remi 09:28, 14 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Wrong redirects!

[edit source]

Please watch what you're doing... you set at least some of the bloom clock redirects to the wrong pages! A lot of those are template-related, please leave it to me because I have to do a bunch more pagemoves before altering the template and deleting the redirects. --SB_Johnny | talk 14:00, 14 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Good to know. I just correted them, as suggested at double redirects page. I'll leave the Bloom Clock related redirects to you. --Gbaor 14:12, 14 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Well, the issue stems from when I first created the global key pages, and afterwards someone pointed out that these were actually only "global" in regards to temperate regions (tropical and monsoon keys will need a different set of them). I could definitely use some help in deleting though once the snag is fixed... if would you consider being a Custodian, I would happily mentor you. --SB_Johnny | talk 14:38, 14 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
I thought about being a custodian, but I haven't got enough time to engage in it right now. Maybe I will have more time during summer... Then I will definitely take advantage of this offer :) --Gbaor 12:56, 17 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
I'd support the custodian move too. A lot of custodians aren't in fact very active - they have their phases. It's not a full time job! On the other hand, perhaps best to be a probationary custodian in a month when you've got some time. I think what counts in your case is your clear interest in maintenance tasks. So when you're ready for a nomination, just tell us. --McCormack 06:10, 15 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for support and trust :) Will do... --Gbaor 06:16, 15 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Your main page comment

[edit source]

Hi Gbaor. Many thanks for your feedback about the community box. Unfortunately I didn't understand quite what the problem is. Perhaps you could show me a screenshot of what you find wrong? Or redescribe? What you can also do is (1) view the source, (2) copy the source, (3) stick the source into a new page (twice, for before and after versions), (4) play with the before and after versions to show what you mean. Thanks. --McCormack 12:38, 30 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

So here is what I meant: Please compare Image:Main page - left alternative.JPG and Image:Main page - center alternative.JPG. I changet the first letter to small "s" to differentiate it from the original. --Gbaor 06:05, 2 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
I had already looked. You are being watched! The problem was that your screen is narrower. So I modified the image size down from 200px to 180px, which should solve the problem. --McCormack 06:06, 2 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
You should increase the size, not to decrease it, I think. Now there are 4 words, instead of 1 at the left side of the picture. On those pictures I uploaded there is only a part of my screen, so it is not narrower. I am using Firefox, screen resolution 1024*768. --Gbaor 06:15, 2 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
If I increase the size, it will make your screen OK, but the screens of those with higher resolutions will begin to have problems. Decreasing the image size is the only way to minimize the number of users who get the "stuck word" problem. It might be sensible if I try 160px. --McCormack 06:23, 2 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
I see. But this was the reason I suggested to change "left" to "center". Therefore you can keep 200px (160 px is probably quite small on higher resolutions than mine) and the problem will be solved for all resolutions. --Gbaor 06:32, 2 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Well, possibly a problem here. The centering of the POTD is for artistic reasons - i.e. the picture is the main thing you're supposed to look at. The other three boxes are primarily information boxes, where the artwork serves a very subordinate, decorative purpose. If you put the pictures in the centre and the text beneath, people may get the wrong message and start looking at the picture rather than the text. At least, that's the thinking behind it. --McCormack 06:38, 2 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

The dark side

[edit source]

Hi again, Gbaor. Why does "dark side" link to the main page ;-) Do you have an alternative design? Would you like to join the main page task force? (Ooops - perhaps "force" was the wrong word...) --McCormack 12:51, 30 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi! The "Dark Side" refers to Wikiversity as whole, not just to the main page. I just picked up an idea by Erkan Yilmaz from here (in the middle of the thread) and combined it with a quote from a not-so-good-guy.
Speaking about the main page... I had a suggestion here. And the same left-center thing could be considered in case of Main Page/Feature 0.5. Otherwise the new page is great, but I have no time to develop it :). --Gbaor 05:12, 2 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your comments. I'll leave the centre/left issue until a time when you have more time, then! But feel welcome to keep thinking about the main page and get involved at some stage. --McCormack 05:33, 2 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Good edit

[edit source]

Hi, Gbaor. I noticed you edited one of "my" templates recently. I checked it out and reckoned it was a really good edit. Can't remember which template any more, but just wanted to say "thanks"! --McCormack 06:11, 8 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

You are welcome! I checked my contributions, and I don't know which was it either, but never mind :) --Gbaor 05:13, 9 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Stubs

[edit source]

Hi Gbaor. Thanks for re-stubbing many pages I dumped with {{stub}}. That's opened my eyes a bit more to subject-specific stubs :) -- Jtneill - Talk 12:39, 19 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Stub sorting rulez, bro! :D We will have to review the existing stub templates however. Most of them were created by me en mass, according to existing schools at that time. There are few "pearls" like {{Computer-Forensics-and-Security-stub}}, which leads to School:Computer forensics and security, a page which will hardly have any reasonable stub page in the near future. These unusable stub templates should be deleted I think. --Gbaor 12:48, 19 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Naming

[edit source]

Hi. :) As I understand it, "Engineering and technology" would be correct, not "Engineering and Technology". Moving this may require the moving of subpages as well. --Remi 00:35, 22 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Custodianship

OpenStat

[edit source]

Hi and thanks for your message. Nothing bad there. It was just that the subpages all have to be moved individually, and there's a lot of them. Make a list of the subpages first. Then move the subpages. Then move the parent page. That's all. If you think you've done something wrong, then the best thing is always just to undo or rollback what you just did, and try again. --McCormack 13:34, 26 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Pagemoves can be also rollbacked? I didn't see such an option, but I was in an extreme hurry. One more thing: Is there a special page that generates/shows all subpages of a resource?--Gbaor 18:02, 26 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
See: http://en.wikiversity.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3APrefixIndex&from=Statistics%3A&namespace=104 . The rollback should be visible in the history - have a look around and experiment with the rollback tool on your user pages. --McCormack 20:29, 26 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

No such page...

[edit source]

I cannot find the GIMP page you say exists. Do you have the right link? 17:44, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

I proposed to merge Topic:GIMP and GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) - both exists. Did you mean these? There is also a page called Gimp basics, but this is not a subject of a merge (should be on a separate page). --Gbaor 18:13, 26 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
System seems to have been acting up. This morning, I was still seeing your early revision from yesterday. ({{Merge|GIMP}}). Now I can see both pages. Yes, they should be combined. Robert Elliott 02:56, 27 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Page deletions

[edit source]

Hi

At current there are alot of un-needed pages for my section. I have looked for ways to delete, but have not found any. I will be uploading a new course over the next few days, and was preparing it by "cleaning up" all the other pages in the section, leaving only the "course pages" (Kernewek Onan, Dew etc.) and the home page (Topic:Cornish).

I have never seen that feature. Thanks TEL

Just a few things if you don't mind ;) 1. Use the ~~~~ four tildes for signature, 2. you can flag pages for deletion with {{delete}} or {{deletion request}}, or use the page mentioned at you talk page. The we will know which pages are not needed any more... In case you leave just a text message, it could be missed by custodians. Have fun with WV! Good to have ya here!--Gbaor 11:59, 30 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Redirect hunting

[edit source]

Heya Gbaor! Sorry for the delay getting back to you... didn't notice your message because there was another new one right after it. The unneeded redirects can be found here: redirects appear in italics. What needs to be done is to check them and see if any have no pages linking to them, and if there are none, it's safe to delete. --SB_Johnny | talk 10:58, 11 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

:-o There is a LOT of work to do... I am in the middle of WV's categorization system review, but I will work also on this. Both activities will be more interesting this way. :) --Gbaor 11:30, 11 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Heh, I'll get with you later about bloom clock categories... half have been done improperly :-(. --SB_Johnny | talk 11:57, 11 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
OK, for now I skipped them, because I didn't want to mess it up. When I finish the marking of categories to merge, than we will storm the Bloom Clock category system (There is also few Fruit clock categories... Skipped them also...) --Gbaor 13:27, 11 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
I think I'm just going to make a temlate for the categories, actualy, so that it's simpler for "non-bloom-clockers" to know what to do. I had asked User:Terra to leave them as redlinks (so we could know how to find them later), but apparently the urge was irresistable :). --SB_Johnny | talk 18:42, 11 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
those redirects were hunted down :)--Gbaor 13:12, 13 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Yay! Thanks! Now I can finish the cleanup a bit easier (still need a bunch of pagemoves :P). --SB_Johnny | talk 11:22, 14 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Wikiversity Film School - Status and Things to do...

[edit source]

Next week, I hope to prepare an overview of the current status of Wikiversity Film School and what needs to be done. Robert Elliott 04:25, 12 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Please drop me a line, when the to-do list will be ready--Gbaor 04:37, 12 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Can you do bots? i.e., Can you track all the links used for a course? (This would find all the current active pages which could be catagorized in a special way.) Robert Elliott 11:54, 12 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
If all the pages are categorized, you should be able to use some DynamicPageList scripts to find the most recently edited pages. Unfortunately you'll have to do this for each category used, unless you're using redundant categorization (for example, all plant profiles in the bloom clock are categorized as Category:Bloom Clock Plants, even though they are also in subcategories of that category, which allows tracking of the most recently edited pages in that project). --SB_Johnny | talk 12:00, 12 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Unfortunately I am not proficient with bots. But in the future I definitely want to learn about them and subsequently to create one. But now I have no time to do this. --Gbaor 12:51, 12 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Film School Status - June 2008
Here is a quick overview of the status.
Work in progress
The film school is about 75% done for the first part. As you might guess, trying to rough out all the parts of a full film school is a very long process as it keeps growing and growing.
Originally, there were four courses.
  • The first course (Basic Filmmaking) got rewritten with lots of new pages.
  • The second course (Film Editing) got simplified.
  • The last two courses on Film Scoring got combined. That is the film scoring course for filmmakers and the film scoring course for musicians is now one course but later they need to be broken back up again into two courses.
  • The future courses are only a simple outline with little detail.
Nothing deleted
Because of the way that Wikiversity is structured, old pages are still out there. All have useful info that must be incorporated into the currently active pages.
What needs to be done now
Therefore, someone needs to walk through all the links and catagorize all the current pages as "currently active" and the other pages need to be listed as "to be recycled.
New feature
Now I am creating student pages. This is a new concept proposed by Cormaggio. All of the students work is placed in one page which for now is the User page.
New greeting page
Contrary to what most people think, I have only had two students who had any interest in learning the Wiki Programming Language (or whatever the correct name is). Therefore, it is NOT productive for you to add the normal greeting template instructing the film student to begin creating pages.
A special introduction needs to be written for film students to help them understand how it all works for film students. I am still working on this. Robert Elliott 14:53, 18 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

What needs to be done now

[edit source]

I have created 2 templates to mark active ({{FS-active page}}) and inactive ({{FS-old page}}) pages. Feel free to modify them as you see fit. Now there is a question, how will one know, if the page is active or inactive... (See also Category:Film School Maintenance)--Gbaor 05:44, 19 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

BCP Categories

[edit source]

Hi again. I made the template, should you want to delve into the BCP cats. For the genera (Special:PrefixIndex/Category:BCP/Genus), see {{Bcp-genuscat}}. For the families (Special:PrefixIndex/Category:BCP/Genus), see {{Bcp-familycat}}. No hurry, but if you're going to try to categorize those, the templates will be by far the most effective way to do it :-). --SB_Johnny | talk 14:14, 12 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

I tried it on Category:BCP/Genus/Abelia, please check if it was used correctly. Also made minor changes in templates. The families are in Special:PrefixIndex/Category:BCP/Family, I assume... I want finish the pending categorization and redirect-deletion process first (and also some real-world-work), and after it I will jump on this :)--Gbaor 05:07, 13 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

"create learning material for offline use" <-- I'm not sure what you have in mind...do you mean something like software that could be distributed by DVD? --JWSchmidt 15:14, 14 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Well... I have no specific needs at the moment, but I meant something like that. I just thought about a possibility to create an educational resource/course/learning material, which will be functional without internet connection (on CD/DVDs or CD/DVD images). So I will probably need a free and easy to use software package for this purpose. Even better with fancy design of the end product. Right now I am just looking for possibilities in this area. --Gbaor 10:22, 15 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi Gabor. You've done a good job as probationary custodian. Just checked out your dates. The 30-days is technically over on 26th June. However I'm not very punctual - I'll kind of get round to writing a mentor's report over the weekend. No great reason to hurry. --McCormack 06:42, 23 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

new arrival from Wikipedia

[edit source]

Hi Gbaor. I'm also from Wikipedia. Been working over there for about a week. An editor suggested I bring my mKR article over here. My question of the moment is: are there any procedures, tools, etc. at Wikiversity that are different from Wikipedia? Rhmccullough 11:46, 25 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Good to have you here :) Basically everything is the same like on WP... I don't know if the Quiz (help, help-simplified) extension is there... Maybe you can use it. Not tool-related difference is, that we accept original research here, as you probably know. And we are much more friendlier :) (Note to other users: Anything else?) --Gbaor 12:08, 25 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Category Update

[edit source]

I have re-categorized all the pages that were mistakenly categorized as Category:Medicine. I have categorized all uncategorized categories and all uncategorized pages in the field of medicine. I will now work through the subcategories and I think there will be nominations for merges, deletions etc. If I have missed something along the way, please don't hesitate to inform me. Donek (talk) - Go raibh mile maith agaibh 00:22, 26 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Good work! It looks much better now :) Nominate pages for merge and deletion, as you see fit. I know there are plenty of short pages, mainly between LMCCs. Before you nominate a page for deletion, consider its possible future use (i.e. mark it with {{medicine-stub}} or {{main welcome}} instead of deletion) --Gbaor 08:44, 26 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
No problem. Can you explain what LMCC means? Donek (talk) - Go raibh mile maith agaibh 10:38, 26 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Don't know for sure, but probably an abbreviation for Licentiate of the Medical Council of Canada (w:LMCC) used by the user who created those pages. These should be merged to corresponding pages without that abbreviation or if no other pages link to that page, than could be deleted. To check this, use the "What link here" on the left side of the screen.--Gbaor 13:12, 26 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
I agree with the merge idea and I will check the links too. Thanks again. One more thing. Is EMR the american equivalent of the British paramedic?Donek (talk) - Go raibh mile maith agaibh 14:02, 26 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Not necessarily. Paramedics are emergency medical responders, but not all EMRs are paramedics.--Gbaor 05:01, 27 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

  • re Slide 43 (infant mortality / number of physicians), there is this note:
    • Image source: Howell (Fundamentals)‏: Why is infant mortality positively linearly associated with the number of physicians (with the effects of GDP removed)?] – because more doctors tend to be deployed to areas with higher infant mortality (socio-economic status aside). Also note, that the effect of GDP has been 'removed' (partialled out).
  • re Slide 45 (solar radiation and breast cancer)
    • I still need to add notes; so checking the textbook about solar radiation and breast cancer, Howell writes that "Figure 9.3 presents data from a 1991 article in Newsweek on the relationship b/w breast cancer and sunshine...(There has been considerable research on this topic in recent years, and the reduction in certain kinds of cancer is thought to be related to the body's production of Vitamin D, which is increased by sunlight).
  • So, these slides are purposely selected, 'counter-intuitive' correlation examples to help illustrate underlying complexity and need to 'think'/question.
  • re Slide 62 - yes b and c are contradictory (c is correct); it is meant to be a 'quiz' question - but obviously this is not so obvious :) - I will fix for next version.

The lectures are recorded with audio and video - but the university only provides them as large files in .wma and .wmv - so, I am not quite of the best way to share them.

Thankyou for your exploration and questions. -- Jtneill - Talk - c 11:48, 24 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

slide 43:'counter-intuitive', that is true. I couldn't find the "GDP effect removed" note in the presentation, perhaps on another slide somewhere (or in the live presentation)? Without this note this graph is debatable, while I naturally associated the lack of (surplus) of doctors with countries, especially with the developing countries with the known overall bad situation (and probably also infant mortality) there. Immediately recalled this picture.
slide 62:So the purpose of contradiction on slide 62 is, that you could ask the question "...and now tell me which one of these points is correct!"? This reminds me a similar approach I used, when I explained to my students, how should they correctly write down pedigrees in text (table) form. First I gave an example with few errors in it, and let them track these errors down.
file sharing: How big are these files? If you want, you can upload them to rapidshare for example, or to a torrent site, like the pirate bay. The content itself is often dubious (user rights and stuff - their copyright policy is "a little" weaker than Wikimedia Foundations's :D), but the technology itself is perfectly legal. If you could upload these presentations somewhere, let me know (also if you need any help with it). OR you can upload it to YouTube like guys from Berkeley did it.--Gbaor 12:43, 24 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

How does Category:Requests for own page deletion get populated? --HappyCamper 12:53, 4 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Is there a way to get it to show up in CAT:CSD in a useful way? --HappyCamper 17:18, 5 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
Well, this category is already included into Category:Requests for Deletion, but if you want, you can re-categorize it under CAT:CSD or you can replace the Category:Requests for Deletion cat. in the "includeonly" section of the template, to sort these requests directly into CAT:CSD. --Gbaor 06:18, 6 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, Gbaor, appreciate it. I probably should have stared at it myself and worked this out, but have been running around like a blue-arsed fly (as we say in the land of Oz) - its a particular kind of large, annoying, buzzing fly. I do appreciate it. I also need an image of 'karma' to send you. -- Jtneill - Talk - c 10:06, 7 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

No problem. I had some time today (also quite rare situation for me lately) so I have done it. ;) --Gbaor 11:14, 7 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Course experience

[edit source]

Thanks for your question, idea, etc. Yes, I will - but we're only half-way! (I planned some down-time to focus on some other tasks in the middle). Last year I kept a blog during the course (but we were doing blogging). This year I will make some wiki reflections more at the end, and gather student impressions/feedback. etc. Do let me know if there's anything you do / do not like or other observations about the experiment. Perhaps I/we should just start Social psychology (psychology)/Reflections/2008 now? -- Jtneill - Talk - c 05:15, 18 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Maybe it could be postponed until the end of the course. But I think there should be also a very short (3-4 sentences long) mention about the previous course, with the link to the blog mentioned. This gives possibilities to choose from, you/we could see the "evolution" between courses, and also the two approaches could be compared with pros and cons.--Gbaor 05:30, 18 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I have seen it. I followed the events from distance though. I am just wondering, how many useful things could be written with the same effort given into "First Great WV War"... Interesting connection with the Soc.Psych. course :) I think these events are related to several topics in your course such as: Social thinking, Aggression, Relationships, Groups & leadership. --Gbaor 05:38, 18 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Brundibár

[edit source]

Szia, Gbaor! Ha nem túl nagy kérés, arra szeretnélek kérni, hogy „javítsd ki” a következő fordítást (én nem tudok csehül):

1. (Hoffmeister): Kdo má rád maminku s tatínkem a naši rodnou zem, je náš kamarád a smí si s námi hrát.

Aki apját-anyját és hazáját szereti, a barátunk és játszunk vele.

Előre is köszönöm.--Kifo 14:26, 19 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Wikiworld/Introduction

I blanked this page http://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/Wikiworld/Introduction because the info I put there was not appropriate for the stated purpose. It should be deleted, how should I go about getting that done? Balognaw 05:55, 20 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

It is already done. Next time you can use {{delete}} or {{delete my page}} templates to flag the page, so any custodian could delete it. --Gbaor 08:48, 21 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

File:Jklyuio.jpg

[edit source]

Would it be possible to delete File:Jklyuio.jpg? It's a clear copyright violation of http://us.fotolia.com/id/4598956 , which is supposed to be a pay site (though it's pretty easy to get around their copy/save protection). I only bring this up because I notice that some of the files listed for speedy deletion have been there quite a while (this one is just shy of a month right now). -- Soap 22:13, 22 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Please also delete Sarey Savy if there is not a deletion tag on the page by the time you read this text; I don't use Wikiversity regularly (only 5 edits in a year) and can't really keep checking back to see if the tag has been removed or not. You can find me at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Soap however. -- Soap 22:17, 22 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Interactive learning resources on Wiki?

[edit source]

To Gbaor from JMC about contributing maths content. Thank you for replying to my request for advice on offering maths content to Wikiversity. However, the material I have to hand is in the form of interactive computer programs plus detailed notes on using the program, so that a student could experiment with algebraic calculations and so learn by doing. The material is not suitable for just pasting as text to a page in Wiki. I know from teaching experience that students learn best by doing, not just reading -- hence the format of my program. Is Wiki interested in this, or is it text-only? (If it is text only, I cannot see the Wikiversity programme being attractive to students, as there are many textbooks and lectures notes available.) JMC Jmc 13:08, 21 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

In that case you can put here the notes, some explanation about the purpose of the materials and how to use the program itself. Then you can link the external site from here, where the potential students can download the program. Have you got an opportunity to upload it to university or personal website? (btw. I am about to do something similar here at WV, but I have to find some time for it :) ) --Gbaor 15:05, 21 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

That sounds a good way forwards, But what exactly does 'here' mean when you say " you can put here the notes"? The interactive program is already uploaded to my personal website www.mathstudio.co.uk -- see the page on group theory. Your advice is much appreciated. Jmc 19:14, 23 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

"Here" I mean: you can copy the notes or the part of notes to Wikiversity, to explain what is the program about and some basic steps how to operate it. Basically what you have in the pdf file, but not only a single page, but several linked pages (Preface + Part1 + a page or two for each exercise). I can help you with that (when I have some free time). Note: You have to be aware, that by uploading any content to WV you agree to put it under under the Creative Commons Attribution/Share-Alike License 3.0 and the GFDL license. See bottom of the page. This means (in short) that anybody can freely re-use your work, but s/he is obligated to credit the initial source. --Gbaor 12:06, 24 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

tools

[edit source]

I hope you will reconsider your request for removal of tools. As far as I am concerned you still have the full support of the community as a respected custodian, and I'm sure that I speak for many others in saying that wikiversity would benefit from your participation as custodian. Please let me know if you would be willing to serve in that capacity and I will reflag your account. --mikeu talk 16:16, 16 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thank you Mikeu! The decision was not made in haste, I thought about it during past several days. Desysoping SB Johnny was simply the last drop. Especially because I strongly believe that SB did the right thing. How can we discuss something, if it is hidden from the 99% of the community? How can the author explain himself if blocked indef? As for me I will certainly remain in services of WV, but not as Custodian, at least not until the current situation is solved. --Gbaor 17:59, 16 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
I respect your decision - but am hopeful about ways this could turn out to just be a temporary break. Thanks for still contributing so proactively. -- Jtneill - Talk - c 11:33, 19 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Gbaor hi, I am Jarrokam and was pleased to see your comment. While still in draft stage, [should that appear] I am anxious to backstop my paper with proper credits and bibliography. The definition of information (Planck) has been a favorite primer of mine concerning communication since I encountered it in 1972. It is examined in a later paragraph complete with examples including the word "Albuquerque'. This is carried forward as closely to the original source. My problem? ...I cannot reemember that source. I believe it may have been a hardcover publication of Library sciences in the newly developed [1968] Programmed Learning Sequence.
