Wikiversity:Candidates for Custodianship/Evolution and evolvability (full custodian)
Evolution and Evolvability
[edit source]Evolution_and_evolvability (talk • email • contribs • stats • logs • global account)
I have been a curator for 9 months now. I am EiC of WikiJSci and active in the other WikiJournals.
I have done quite a bit of template importing (often needed by submitted articles) and would like to also help in activating relevant MediaWiki features. So far I have relied upon Dave Braunschweig for adding features like Citoid, reference tooltips and some components of Template:efn. I'd like to be able to help out with some of these technical tasks to reduce the workload on existing custodians.
I've gained some experience as a curator in manipulating aspects of MediaWiki, and will be glad to learn some more.
I intend to be very conservative in editing areas outside of WikiJournals, since I've far less experience in those parts of the site. I'll likely sandbox any large changes to give oportunty for feedback from other curators (e.g. an additional section on the main page).
Custodians willing to mentor
[edit source]- I'm willing to mentor for the Custodian tasks. Dave's the on-site IT specialist. I have inserted some MediaWiki code where needed. --Marshallsumter (discuss • contribs) 02:51, 16 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Comments and/or questions for the candidate
[edit source]- There are several functional differences between curators and custodians that come to mind, but the easiest way to describe them is as editing tools and user management. Custodianship includes the ability to edit the MediaWiki namespace, undelete pages, edit abuse filters, etc. Your technical abilities in wiki editing are impressive, and I have no concerns in that regard. Custodianship also includes the ability to block and unblock users. Can you tell us more about how you will approach blocking, unblocking, and other potential user management responsibilities? -- Dave Braunschweig (discuss • contribs) 15:13, 16 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
- My thoughts are that there should be plenty of warning and explanation on what the problem is before blocking is considered, to ensure that any problem behaviour is not fixable. Especially for disruptive editing, many new users are acting in good faith and do not realise their disruption. If there is any clear repeat of the problem behaviour, then blocking is appropriate (especially abuse). However I would seek consensus via community review in all but the most egregious cases, especially to begin with. T.Shafee(Evo﹠Evo)talk 00:04, 17 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

- Support Actually, I am new at wikiversity and don't know much about the custodianship. However, I searched little about this person who nominated for the custodianship. I can say that this person is hardworking and because of that he will most probably learn the required functions for custodianship, he may not have them for now, in a fast manner.
