Helping Give Away Psychological Science (HGAPS, pronounced as two syllables: "H-Gaps") is a nonprofit (501c3) service organization with affiliated chapters at multiple universities. HGAPS is dedicated to helping the best information about psychological science reach the people who would benefit. Our goal is to build small groups to improve the information about psychology on Wikipedia and in the community. Vision and Mission
[edit | edit source]Helping Give Away Psychological Science (HGAPS pronounced as two syllables: "H-Gaps") is a volunteer-based non-profit (501c3) that is dedicated to helping the best information about psychological science reach the people who would benefit. HGAPS aims to bridge the gap between students, clinicians, researchers, and the public by creating and spreading accessible and free resources. We bring together students and content experts to gather and present the best information about psychological science to the people who benefit. We aim to link Wikipedia (and Google) with high-quality resources and information about psychological science, improving the next generation of training, and creating tools that help practitioners and researchers.
The official vision and mission statements (approved by the National Board in Summer 2021) are:
Vision: Share psychological science to help improve lives.
Mission: Bridge the science-practice gap by collecting, distilling, and sharing psychological science to promote well-being in the community.

Goals for HGAPS in 2017-2018 year[edit | edit source]
|
Membership
[edit | edit source]At the UNC Chapter, for example, all members of HGAPS are required to attend 70% of meetings per semester and be full time students (undergraduate or graduate) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. HGAPS will be using a point system similar to other clubs. The HGAPS Club will abide by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Non-Discrimination Policy for Student Organizations, which states the following: Membership and participation in the organization must be open to all students without regard to age, race, color, national origin, disability, religious status or historic religious affiliation, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. Membership and participation in the organization must also be open without regard to gender, unless exempt under Title IX. Student organizations that select their members on the basis of commitment to a set of beliefs (e.g., religious or political beliefs) may limit membership and participation in the organization to students who, upon individual inquiry, affirm that they support the organization's goals and agree with its beliefs, so long as no student is excluded from membership or participation on the basis of his or her age, race, color, national origin, disability, religious status or historic religious affiliation, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, or, unless exempt under Title IX, gender. The HGAPS Club will have members pay dues of $12 per semester or $20 per academic year. The Treasurer will handle the finances for membership dues. Funding for any activities will come from outside sources such as fundraisers and requests to Student Congress.
Club Leadership Positions
[edit | edit source]The executive board will consist of a president elect, president, past-president, and treasurer, all of whom must be full-time, registered undergraduate or graduate students of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. There will be a faculty advisor, who can be a full-time faculty or staff member of UNC-Chapel Hill, UNC Hospitals, or an affiliated department; an emeritus UNC-Chapel Hill faculty or staff member; or a campus minister. Social Media Chair will be another elected official, however, they will not be included on the executive board. Executive Board members remain in their respective positions until they abdicate or are impeached. Majority vote from all members of the club will elect a new member to the available position. If the President abdicates or is impeached, the President-Elect will take over. The Executive Board will run in succession where the President-Elect, a sophomore, will become the President the following academic year and the President, a junior, will become the Past-President. Elections will take place before the end of spring semester to ensure a smooth transition of leadership positions. Members of the Executive Board are eligible for impeachment if they abuse their power in any way deemed inappropriate. This includes racist, sexist or otherwise inappropriate behavior, actions, or hazing. Impeachment will result in a majority vote to determine what disciplinary action will be taken, resulting in membership termination or probation. Impeachment will also be considered if an Executive Board member does not attend at least 50% of meetings.
Position | Description |
---|---|
President | The President is responsible for overseeing all of the club’s activities. He or she will make sure the club meets and holds events (fundraisers, trips, etc.) regularly throughout the semester and will help come up with ideas for psychology related events and activities club members can participate in. |
President-Elect | The President-Elect will focus on recruiting new members to the club to ensure that the club continues to develop and improve over time. In addition, the President-Elect will be in charge of checking-in members at meetings and related events and work closely with the Treasurer to plan budgets. He or she will also make sure members will attend the required number of meetings. They will be responsible for any written minutes about voting and meetings (serving a role similar to Secretary in some other clubs). |
Past-President | The Past-President will act as an advisor to both the President and President-Elect. They will be on the executive board and participate in voting. |
Treasurer | The Treasurer will monitor funds. The Treasurer is a member of the Executive Board. He or she will ensure each member pays their club dues and handle all finances for merchandise and all other activities. The Treasurer will also be responsible for seeking financial aid from the University as appropriate. |
Secretary | The Secretary will be responsible for checking in members and taking attendance at every meeting. They will take minutes during executive meetings and check the HGAPS gmail account, replying to inquiries or forwarding relevant messages to the appropriate individuals for a response. |
Social Media Chair | The Social Media Chair will be responsible for creating, updating, and editing HGAPS social media platforms including: Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. This is an elected position, though it is not part of the Executive Board. |
Faculty Advisor | The Faculty Advisor must be a full-time faculty or staff member of UNC-Chapel Hill, UNC Hospitals, or an affiliated department; an emeritus UNC-Chapel Hill faculty or staff member; or a campus minister. The Advisor does not have the right to vote. The Advisor will be given the position of one of the primary contacts for the University. The Advisor will serve until he or she abdicates. |
Conferences and Meetings
[edit | edit source]Meetings
[edit | edit source]There are 14 meetings per semester with at least two Executive Board members in attendance at each. Additional meetings and activities are held as needed. Meetings are currently held Thursday evenings from 6:00 - 8:00 pm in Howell Hall on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus. A remote option via Zoom is available for national 501(c)3 and international collaborators, most of whom are graduate students or professionals in the field.
Speaker Series
[edit | edit source]HGAPS has created speaker series where we invite distinguished members of our field to come share tips about graduate school, speak about their research, discuss opportunities in the field, and provide advice on topics such as public speaking.

Current and Past Projects
[edit | edit source]HGAPS Club has accumulated and impressive body of work, including many Wikipedia and Wikiversity pages regarding Evidence-Based Assessment, among other projects. The following are pages HGAPS members have created on Wikipedia: /HGAPS Wikipedia and Wikiversity Projects. North Carolina Psychological Association (NCPA)
Tools we use
[edit | edit source]Canva -- a software package with free images, free student licensing, and templates that we have used to make a lot of our infographics.
Google Suite -- organization-wide storage and workspace for most of our project planning and output outside of Wiki. Our institution-specific bylaws, meeting agendas, planning documents, records, and more all are housed on Google Suite, allowing for team collaboration with a higher degree of confidentiality.
Grammarly -- AI based writing assistant and browser extension, Grammarly reviews English writing for grammar, punctuation, spelling, tone, and clarity. We use this resource specifically as it is provided at a discounted price for UNC-CH students, where the first HGAPS chapter was created.
OSF -- OSF, or the Open Science Framework, is an online platform where academic research projects, materials, and data can be organized and archived. OSF is a free, open source web tool that streamlines collaboration and organization during the research process. You can find our project OSF here.
R Markdown
Zotero -- free, open source desktop application and browser extension. Zotero is a reference management software that allows bibliographic data and reference materials to be stored, organized, and shared between collaborators.
ORCID -- an ORCID, or Open Researcher and Contributor ID, is a non-proprietary alphanumeric code that allows the work of published researchers and scientific contributors to be uniquely identified across platforms. This tool is useful as it neatly tracks and organizes published works even if an individual's institutional affiliation or surname change.
Slack -- our main platform for remote communication, Slack is an instant messaging platform designed for professional communication.

2020 Dr. Eric Youngstrom receives the Elizabeth Hurlock Beckman Award.
[edit | edit source]Gail McKnight Beckman created the Beckman award to benefit teachers who have inspired their students to make a difference in the community. The award is given to current or former academic faculty members who have inspired their former students to “create an organization which has demonstrably conferred a benefit on the community at large.”[2] Dr. Youngstrom received $25,000 and was selected for inspiring former student and alum Mian-Li Ong, Lizzie Wilson, and others to make a significant difference in the community.[3] HGAPS conducts transformational mental health work and shares if freely with the community. Dr. Youngstrom and his family donated the entire award to the HGAPS 501c3.
