Initial suggestions

[edit source]

@U891419: Thanks for tackling this topic. Some initial suggestions:

  • Check out other related chapters and see how you can build on, link to, and integrate with that work:

Category:Motivation and emotion/Book/Environment Category:Motivation and emotion/Book/Volunteering

  • What psychological theories can help to understand? What is the main research in this area?

Sincerely, James -- Jtneill - Talk - c 12:43, 7 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

Many thanks James. I'm rethinking the structure. I'm feeling it will be far more useful to end users (vols and those who create experiences for them) if the structure
- briefly intro'ed the key theories
- then focused on what the theories tell us about the motivations behind:
1 why vols join in the first place
2 why vols stay
3 why vols leave
I'll keep reading and see if the refs support the structure/approach above. It feels more practical than the current approach/structure. I might also contact a few people I know who work directly with env vols and ask them what they would like to see/read so it is directly relevant to what they do in the real world.

Peer Suggestion

[edit source]

Hi Damian, you've picked an interesting topic! Could you consider adding a feature where the audience could consider what motivates (or could motivate) them? This may help the audience begin to understand the different types of motivations that exist in this field... and then they can explore the ideas/theories more as they read your chapter. Looking forward to coming back later in the semester to see more. --U3218323 (discusscontribs) 09:14, 16 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

@U891419: Hi Damian, I made some minor edits to your reference list by changing the journal titles from sentence case to title case (as per APA 7 style). All the best with your chapter :) Emma --U3230003 (discusscontribs) 09:42, 7 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Peer suggestment

[edit source]

Hi Damian! you have read about this topic and discussed it really well. I was just suggesting if you wanted to expand of your studies and research into more depth. eg., explaining the aims and methods and discussing how the researchers found their results. It could promote more growth for discussion! you have a lot of credible studies and support your theme well. U3226707 (discusscontribs) 01:35, 9 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Overall

[edit source]
  1. Overall, this is an excellent chapter. It successfully uses psychological theory and research to help address a practical, real-world phenomenon or problem.
  2. For additional feedback, see the following comments and these copyedits
  1. Solid Overview
  2. Briefly explains the problem or phenomenon
  3. I've tried separating out a problem statement from the scenario
  4. Engages reader interest by introducing a case study and/or example and/or using an image
  5. Clear focus question(s)
  1. An excellent range of relevant theories are selected, described, and explained
  2. The chapter doesn't wander off into discussion of irrelevant theory
  3. Could build more strongly on other related chapters (e.g., by embedding links to other chapters in this category: Category:Motivation and emotion/Book/Volunteering)
  4. Insightful depth is provided about relevant theory(ies)
  5. Effective of tables and/or lists are to help clearly convey key theoretical information
  6. Excellent use of examples to illustrate theoretical concepts
  7. Key citations are well used
  1. The Reeve (2018) textbook is overused as a citation – instead, utilise primary, peer-reviewed sources

  2. Excellent critical thinking about relevant research is evident
  3. Claims are referenced
  1. Excellent integration between theory and research
  1. Excellent summary and conclusion
  2. Key points are well summarised
  3. Clear take-home message(s)
  1. Written expression

  2. Grammar, spelling, and proofreading are excellent
    1. Use serial commas[1] – they are part of APA style and are generally recommended by grammaticists. See explanatory video (1 min)
    2. Figures
      1. Figures are very well captioned
      2. Each Figure is referred to at least once within the main text
    3. Citations are close to full APA style (7th ed.). For example:
      1. If there are three or more authors, cite the first author followed by et al., then year. For example, either:
        1. in-text, Smith et al. (2020), or
        2. in parentheses (Smith et al., 2020)### A full stop is needed after "et al" (i.e., "et al.") because it is an abbreviation of et alii.
    4. References use correct APA style
  1. Excellent use of learning features
  2. Excellent use of embedded in-text interwiki links to Wikipedia articles
  3. Basic use of embedded in-text links to related book chapters. Embedding in-text links to related book chapters helps to integrate this chapter into the broader book project.
