Voices In The Family

I listened to the Teens and the Internet podcast. The panel was very good. I agree that most kids probably like to use online communications to interact with people they already know. Wikimedia wikis allow social interaction that are not likely to be of a familiar type or with familiar people, so it is not clear to me that most kids would be all that interested in participating. Some teens start to develop more specialized or "adult" interests and then have reasons to venture into new kinds of online relationships. I know there is a research literature about online communities, but I do not follow it. People like Cormaggio probably follow some of the published research on kids and online communities. --JWSchmidt 02:22, 27 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

AII?

Hi, I have started to make keys for my country. The new template is easy to use. Anyway, I havent just understood the function of "AII" e.g. here: Category:Bloom Clock Keys/Prague so I will add it to all categories kinda this. What does it mean?--Juan 16:20, 11 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi Juan. "All" is just for "unsorted"... e.g. not sorted by color, type, etc. --SB_Johnny | talk 19:16, 11 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

BCP user account change

One more q, would it be a big problem for the project if I change two user accouts?--Juan 19:59, 11 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Custodian request

Hi SB-Johnny. I wonder if you could do me a favour? I am an admin at Wikipedia and happen to have earned myself a stalker who has made it his mission to out my identity. He has been banned from Wikipedia, but clearly saw the opportunity to out me here. See Itsyourturn (talk • email • contribs • stats • logs • global account). I'd appreciate it if you could delete his edit to my talkpage out of privacy concerns and, if possible, ensure he doesn't continue his campaign here. Thanks! Re: Ahem! Ahem!

"Well, you asked me to "adopt you", and I looked into it, and I've come to the conclusion that I don't want to be part of that program. However, I am perfectly happy to help walk you through the other wikimedia projects, so that you can see how they come together (because that was essentially why I wrote you the note in the first place). Rather than adopting you, I'll instead offer to be your "mentor" on Wikiversity, so please just list yourself here, and I'll be your mentor (which means you will have admin tools, which I think will be helpful for you to see how things work on wikimedia projects).

It's clear to me that you're a smart and dedicated contributor, but you need to see a bigger picture. If you'll have me, I'll be your teacher for a while and walk you through it. --SB_Johnny | talk 22:51, 23 December 2007 (UTC)"Reply

I've listed myself. Thanks for your offer. P.S. I have another user who is interested. Blow of Light 03:12, 25 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Bloom clock in video

Take a look at the video linked to from Stanford Open Source Lab, the bloom clock project is shown as an example about 27 minutes into the video. --JWSchmidt 04:56, 30 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, I just might consider that. [1] Let me look over what is involved and give it some thought. --mikeu 21:10, 5 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia survey2

Hi, my general layout of Template:Wmdgs-wikipedia-survey2 is nearly finished. I have just one questions if there is a technical way to ask user a lenguage and generating category using wiki language codes (e.g. en, es, pl, pt, etc.). Then when this will be finnished - I will try it to correct it by the means of logic way, and after that, I will leave it to you, if you can have a look. --Juan 09:54, 10 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hmmm, it needs a bit of copyediting for spelling and such. I might have a go at it using the generator template. --SB_Johnny | talk 14:08, 10 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

commons images

Yeah, the commons images need to be deleted. There is a (real world) class on intro to computers and the students have been uploading lots of images. When I saw the first batch a week ago I relinked and deleted, and left a few messages to explain how to do things. Then another batch was uploaded this week which are the ones at the top of my todo list. At this point I think it is more urgent to talk to the uploaders (note that one of the files I deleted was reuploaded, along with a batch of new files including a couple copyvio) I have left a few messages, but will likely not get a response until Tue. which is when I think they meet. I'd suggest that if you do delete any, you leave a message on the talk page of the uploader explaing how to link to commons and resize. I see the existing list of files to be deleted as not so important to delete quickly, but we need to prevent the list from growing rapidly... --mikeu 18:15, 18 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

I won't have time to get anything on the todo list done today, or Sat. So feel free to dive in. --mikeu 21:38, 18 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Crocus

Hi John, I saw a Crocus vernus (Dutch crocus) today, and added a log to BCP/Crocosmia. Is that the right page, or should we set up a new one for this crocus? Cormaggio talk 19:47, 28 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Well, I would say its better to found a new log, higher taxa logs are usually used when we are not able to say exactly whichs species we have seen blooming. Anyway, thats cool, that something is flowering in Janura:-)--Juan 22:43, 28 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
Actually, Crocosmia and Crocus aren't the same genus! I think there might even be a log for BCP/Crocus vernus :). --SB_Johnny | talk 11:08, 29 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
Oops! Ok, corrected now. I was going from Bloom_Clock/2007_part_two, where it wasn't listed - so, should I add it to that list there, or should we open a new clock? Can this be done automatically? Cormaggio talk 13:23, 29 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
Heh, oops for me too. I forgot to reset the redirects, but the current text log should be Bloom Clock/2008 part one. If you add a plant's name there (using {{bcp}} or {{bcp+}}, you'll either get a red or a blue link to the log page. Wikiversity search works too if you want to skip the text log. --SB_Johnny | talk 12:20, 30 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Adding countries

Sorry about buggering the template; I was in the process of fixing it when I saw your message. I'll let you fix it. :) Horologium 13:55, 30 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hmmmm, I went back to edit my survey (to add Japan and South Korea), but they're not there. Is it too late (once you've done the survey, it's trapped in Amber forever)? I'd like to add six more countries...United Arab Emirates, Hong Kong SAR, Singapore, and Phillipines (in Asia; forgot it at first), Liechtenstein (in Europe), and Bahamas (in N. America). Wikimedian Demographics update

Hello SB Johnny. I'm writing because you requested a reminder about progress on Wikimedian Demographics. For the time being these will be about once per month.

Speaking of reminders, it turns out the template question isn't the most efficient way of coming up with a mailing list. If you want to recieve this message on another of your talk pages (or don't want them at all), please edit the list on Wikimedian Demographics/Reminders.

To update on progress so far, there have been somewhere around 50 respondents over the past month, with more trickling in slowly but steadily. There are 7 major surveys (or 12, depending on how you count them):

  1. The basic survey (about your participation in Wikimedia)
  2. The "geography" surveys (actually 6 of those, for each inhabited continent)
  3. The Operating System survey (still stubby)
  4. The Wikipedia survey
  5. The Commons survey
  6. The US presidential elections survey
  7. The sexuality and relationships survey

Only the geography surveys have had any major modifications since being originally posted (more countries were added to those).

Several new surveys have been discussed at Talk:Wikimedian Demographics, as well as other places within Wikiversity. A few that might be ready sometime in February include:

  • A survey about Women in Wikimedia
  • A survey about Wikibooks
  • A survey about Wikiversity
  • A survey about administrative issues (including cross-wiki topics such as CheckUser and "global blocking")
  • A survey about environmental issues
  • A survey about religion
  • A survey about international trade

If you have ideas for more surveys, please share them on Talk:Wikimedian Demographics. Thanks for your participation thus far, and we hope to see you soon! --SB_Johnny | talk 11:31, 5 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

BCP acess difficulties

Hi, I think, there will be a need of kinda list and/or category for all existing logs in BCP. If I typed Bloom Clock and then clicked on "the current text-based clock" I have realised, theres no way from this page to get which species is already logged and which not. I mean for new participants thich is "unfriendly beginning". I will perdonaly do it via my February key.--Juan 15:12, 9 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Category:Bloom Clock Plants has all of the logs (added by the bottom template). I guess we could link to that (or Category:Bloom Clock Project Plants, which has no subcategories). I've never been able to figure out how to make it friendlier, in part because a lot of people don't know the scientific names anyway. You can on the other hand just type in the name of the plant in the search field.
A master text list might do it too (a list of all the plants linked using {{bcp+}}). I honestly haven't been doing much with the text based lists for a while, since almost anything blooming in my region will be on the Southeastern Pennsylvania Keys. Probably the best way would be to improve how search works by making sure all the BCP profiles have as many common names as are likely to be in use. --SB_Johnny | talk 12:10, 10 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Well, I thnink it is that what I am talking about to place there a link to this category. And adding redirect from common names it can also help.--Juan 15:40, 10 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Learning communities

Hi Johnny, I've used some of your comments from the recent Colloquium discussion on action research etc on the discussion group page for the Wikiversity learning model. Your input would be great. Cormaggio talk 10:42, 11 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

IP vandalism in the past

Gah, I'm really sorry for that... someone installed XRumer and a load of other free software on a public terminal and caused it to be used as a spambot location. Just had to clear the registry in Windows of all the spam software and free software. Anyway, the aforementioned user isn't editing Wikipedia, his public terminal login is deleted, and our IP can't access Wikimedia projects. Please can you get this IP unblocked on http://en.wikibooks.org for me?? I'd like to edit on Wikibooks or quote, but can't due to his antics... anyway, we're now improving security at our end so the IP shouldn't be blocked anymore in the future. An anonymous technician. --84.45.219.185 12:02, 11 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Looks like you have more work to do [2]. You're not blocked here if there was something you wanted to work on, but I won't be unblocking you on Wikibooks (or any of the other projects) for now, since you have a history of disruptive unblock requests on Wikipedia. --SB_Johnny | talk 13:26, 11 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Warm thoughts

Hi Johnny, I just looked into Wikiversity:Candidates for Custodianship, and I'm delighted to see your self-nomination for b'crat. However, I saw your news of your father's death - I'm very sorry to hear this - and I wanted to extend to you and your family my deepest, warmest solidarity. Cormaggio talk 20:11, 5 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the notes. On user renaming - how would a note on WP/Commons clear up any bad faith requests. On blooming - yes, plenty in bloom here for the last week - but I haven't had a camera (or even got up close enough to describe). I wonder if there could be ways of logging something a week ago or in another location for that matter (without needing to create multiple accounts, as you have done)? As it happens, I am currently frantically writing up a paper for Wikimania (I hadn't realised I'll need to write a whole paper instead of just an abstract), which involves a discussion of the Bloom Clock - the paper's about "collaborative research on Wikiversity". Still waiting for Spring

Hey Johnny,

I had a dream about the bloom clock last night, so I guess it's safe to say I have not forgotten about it. We still have two or three feet of snow on the ground here, so I have not detected any blooming at all. But in my dream, I saw that the Dogwoods had already bloomed and lost their blossoms. I won't log that though, seeing as how it didn't really happen. I'm ready for Spring! --Jomegat 13:11, 14 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Introduction to Biology for Kids

Hi! I've had this idea kicking around in my head for a while and I wondered if you'd be interested in helping out when I get it going? I want to make an easy-reading learning resource aimed at young children (probably about 1st through 4th grade) guiding them through some basic biology concepts and taking them on a sort of exploration of the taxonomic system. I have some ideas, but it's going to take along time to get everything set up and going, and I have a feeling we'll be adding more and more content for a long, long time. I'm not going to start the project until summer, when I have more time, but when I do, would you be interested in helping me? --Luai lashire 17:55, 16 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
