Initial suggestions[edit source]

@U3223909: Thanks for tackling this topic.

Some initial suggestions:

  • Check out other social psychology chapters and see how you can build on, link to, and integrate with that work.
  • A case study could consider anomie theory as it relates to colonialism and Indigenous Australians
  • What psychological theories can help to understand? What is the main research in this area?

Let me know if I can do anything else as you go along.

Sincerely, James -- Jtneill - Talk - c 07:28, 6 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

Topic development feedback[edit source]

The topic development submission has been reviewed according to the marking criteria. Written feedback is provided below, plus there is a general feedback page. Please also check the chapter's page history for editing changes made whilst reviewing this chapter plan. Responses to this feedback can be made by starting a new section below and/or contacting the reviewer. Topic development marks are available via UCLearn. Note that marks are based on what was available before the due date.

Title[edit source]

  1. The title is correctly worded and formatted
  2. The sub-title is correctly worded and formatted

Headings[edit source]

  1. Promising 3-level heading structure – could benefit from simplifying to a 2-level structure
  2. Avoid having sections with only 1 sub-heading – use 0 or 2+ sub-headings (e.g., if there is 2.1 there should also be 2.2)
  3. Consider closer alignment between top-level headings and focus questions

Overview[edit source]

  1. Promising
  2. Case study is rather abstract; consider personalising
  3. Consider adding an image to the case study to help attract reader interest
  4. My sense is anomie is a concept that overlaps sociology and psychology - if so, this might be worth pointing out
  5. Excellent focus questions - but these could also be varied - just keep checking how closely they tie back into the sub-title question

Key points[edit source]

  1. Promising, but be more ruthless in directly focusing on the question in the sub-title
  2. Include more practical examples of anomie (e.g., move First Nations Australians box up higher). That case study could benefit from more citations. Consider adding an image (e.g., there are colonial paintings of Indigenous Australians on Wikimedia Commons)
  3. What is anomie? This section should also include some connection to motivation
  4. Micro-level and institutional (is this macro-level??) anomie sections don't have sufficient relevance to motivation - work on this as a key priority
  5. I-E motivation is the most promising section because it brings A and M together. But why only focus on I-E motivation and not other aspects of motivation (e.g., learned helplessness)?
  6. In general, avoid starting so many sentences with author names. Unless their name is particularly pertinent, consider moving the citation to the end of the sentence. This will lead to a more readable writing style.
  7. Promising balance of theory and research# Conclusion (the most important section):
    1. Underway
    2. What might the take-home, practical messages be? (What are the answer(s) to the question(s) in the sub-title and/or focus questions?)

Figure[edit source]

  1. Excellent - A relevant figure is presented, captioned, and cited
  2. Figure(s) are cited at least once in the main text

Learning feature[edit source]

  1. Include in-text interwiki links for the first mention of key terms to relevant Wikipedia articles and/or to other relevant book chapters
  2. Promising use of example(s)/case study(ies)
  3. First Nations case study currently looks like a long paragraph - consider perhaps how to abbreviate and/or break up
  4. Consider including more examples/case studies, quiz question(s), table(s) etc.

References[edit source]

  1. Excellent

Resources[edit source]

  1. See also
    1. Excellent
  2. External links
    1. Excellent

User page[edit source]

  1. Good
  2. Brief description about self provided – consider expanding
  3. Consider linking to your eportfolio page and/or any other professional online profile or resume such as LinkedIn. This is not required, but it can be useful to interlink your professional networks.
  4. Link provided to book chapter

Social contribution[edit source]

  1. Excellent – at least three different types of contributions with direct link(s) to evidence

Feedback and suggestions[edit source]

Hi,

This is an intriguing emotion and I'm enjoying learning about it through your chapter! Your case study at the beginning was informative in that it help me understand the concept of anomie clearly. Well done! I noticed that there are no hyperlinks to Wikipedia pages and thought this might be relevant for relevant theorists such as Émile Durkheim and the relevant theories you've highlighted such as intrinsic/extrinsic motivation and learned helplessness.

Keep up the good work! I look forward to reading your finished chapter. U3197031 (discusscontribs) 03:44, 5 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Multimedia presentation feedback

The accompanying multimedia presentation has been marked according to the marking criteria. Marks are available via the unit's UCLearn site. Written feedback is provided below, plus see the general feedback page. Responses to this feedback can be made by starting a new section below. If you would like further clarification about the marking or feedback, contact the unit convener.

Overall[edit source]

  1. Overall, this is a good presentation

Overview[edit source]

  1. This presentation could be improved by displaying and narrating a slide with the same title and sub-title as the book chapter to help the viewer understand the purpose of the presentation
  2. Engaging introduction to hook audience interest (but perhaps could be shorter than 30 seconds)
  3. A context for the topic is clearly established through an example
  4. Consider asking focus questions that lead to take-away messages. This will help to focus and discipline the presentation.

Content[edit source]

  1. Comments about the book chapter may also apply to this section
  2. The presentation addresses the topic
  3. An appropriate amount of content is presented — not too much or too little
  4. The presentation makes very good use of relevant psychological theory
  5. The presentation makes no explicit use of relevant psychological research
  6. Include key citations to support claims
  7. The presentation makes basic use of one or more examples or case studies or practical advice

Conclusion[edit source]

  1. A Conclusion slide is presented with a basic summary
  2. The presentation could be strengthened by expanding on the take-home message (e.g., answers to more than one focus question)
  3. The Conclusion only partly fitted within the time limit
  4. The Conclusion did not fit within the time limit

Audio[edit source]

  1. The presentation makes reasonably good use of narrated audio
  2. The narration is somewhat well practiced and/or performed, but could be improved
  3. Audio recording quality was OK. Review microphone set-up to achieve higher recording quality. Probably an on-board microphone was used (e.g., background noise was audible).
  4. The narrated content is well matched to the target topic (see content) but there is no mention of research

Video[edit source]

  1. Overall, visual display quality is reasonably good
  2. The presentation makes good use of text and image based slides
  3. The presentation makes basic use of text-based slides
  4. The font size is sufficiently large to make it easy to read
  5. The visual communication is supplemented in a basic way by images and/or diagrams
  6. The presentation is well produced using simple tools
  7. The visual content is well matched to the target topic (see content) but there is no mention of research

Meta-data[edit source]

  1. The chapter title and sub-title (or an abbreviation to fit within the 100 character limit) are used in the name of the presentation — this helps to clearly convey the purpose of the presentation
  2. A brief written description of the presentation is provided. Consider expanding.
