Template

[edit source]

Hi u3133240 :) If you want to 'quick start' your chapter check the instructions in the purple box on the Book chapter - Author guidelines page. This adds the template material and create an initial structure, which is what I've done to start my chapter. Hope this helps! --U3012363 (discusscontribs) 04:02, 8 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hello, u3133240 As suggested above there is a template that can help with the initial structure of your chapter. Along with this template is a template to format your references so they're conforming to APA 6th referencing. Good start however i would suggest a few more topic headings eg. external links. As this is a requirement for the assignment however very simple. Hope this helps, u3141330. --U3141330 (discusscontribs) 7:01, 4th September 2017 (UTC)

Section headings

[edit source]
  1. Shorter headings are suggested - see other book chapters as examples
  2. The current question-based headings could instead be used as the basis for focus questions in the Overview
  3. A section should contain either 0 or 2+ sub-sections - avoid having sections which contain 1 sub-section.

Key points

[edit source]
  1. No key points are provided for some sections
  2. Full paragraphs are provided for other sections
  3. As this is a fairly technical/neuroscience topic, consider how to make it more interesting/accessible to a lay audience

Feedback and suggestions

[edit source]

Hi! Great choice of topic, I find tDCS endlessly interesting as it has so many applications! I just have a few suggestions for helping this chapter to meet the assignment criteria. Keep in mind that our audience is a lay/non-expert audience, so a more comprehensive description of exactly how tDCS works might be useful! Also, as the target reader is a "general (non-topic-expert) reader interested in personal growth and development", it might be useful to focus on some of the more general applications of tDCS, such as those found in Jones, Gözenman and Berryhill (2014), rather than clinical applications only. There are also interesting applications of tDCS around motivated decision making and reducing impulsivity in substance abuse. If you do want to focus specifically on depression, it might be good to examine the mechanisms of tDCS (eg. anodal stimulation increasing prefrontal cortex activity), and whether this effects motivation directly, thereby reducing depressive symptoms, or indirectly, with reduced symptoms leading to greater self-belief and therefore motivation. Don't forget to tie in some theories of motivation either!
Good luck and good work so far! RaniaLillian (discusscontribs) 01:28, 14 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

APA references

[edit source]

Topic is coming along nicely, I had a look through and edited some of the intext references to APA format. I only did the ones i was 100% sure of so please double check yourself before submitting. Keep it up! --Maddison Frost (discusscontribs) 08:45, 22 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

General Edits

Presentation and Interactive Elements

[edit source]

Hey there - I love love love this topic so many clinical and practical implications and you have incorporated a comprehensive review thus far - well done. I noticed that there is an area on the rubric that requires examples:

"Consider including one or more practical examples, such as case studies. Try to apply the selected theory(ies) and research to everyday life situations that readers are likely to encounter.

I believe incorporating a case study into your chapter will be an effective way of illustrating your theoretical examples especially when tDCS may have been used in a clinical sense - i.e. in the field of dpression? Under your motivation section you have provided a really extensive real-life application, and for me this was your most well written part so maybe considering doing this again with a more tDCS and motivation approach?

Also there is a section in the rubric titled 'integrative features' worth 5% and this includes the utilisation of quizzes, tables, figures etc. Maybe incoperating a quiz or some tables may enable you to get the full 5%?

Overall great job for undertaking such a difficult topic, well done Jane --U3144362 (discusscontribs) 12:52, 22 October 2017 (UTC)u3144362 11:52PMReply

Chapter review and feedback

[edit source]

This chapter has been reviewed according to the marking criteria. Written feedback is provided below, plus there is a general feedback page. Please also check the chapter's page history to check for editing changes made whilst reviewing through the chapter. Responses to this feedback can be made by starting a new section below and/or contacting the reviewer. Chapter marks will be available later via Moodle, along with social contribution marks and feedback. Keep an eye on Announcements.

Overall

[edit source]
  1. Overall, this chapter lacks sufficient focus on the topic - the relationship between tDCS and motivation - and has too much emphasis on describing general motivation theory and non-motivational effects of tDCS.
  2. The sub-title was corrected, to match the approved topic listed in the book table of contents.
  3. See some suggested copyediting changes: [1]
  1. There is too much general background material, particularly about motivation. Instead, briefly summarise and link to more info e.g., motivation (Wikipedia), so that this chapter can concentrate on addressing the relationship between tDCS and motivation.
  2. Reeve (2015) is over-used as a citation - instead, go to primary, peer-reviewed sources.
  3. The discussion of motivation theories is largely unconnected to tDCS and based on textbook material
  4. A rather speculative argument about the effect of tDCS on motivation is suggested by the chapter.
  1. A more indepth and critical review of tDCS research about the effects on motivation would improve the chapter.
  2. Where using the effects of tDCS on other outcomes, more caution needs to be used in arguing that this will lead to motivational outcomes until there is more evidence that this is the case.
  3. When describing important research findings, indicate the size of effects in addition to whether or not there was an effect or relationship.
  4. Some statements were unreferenced - see the [factual?] tags
  1. Written expression
    1. This chapter appears to be a draft; at least it would need significant proofreading and rewriting to be of professional standard.
    2. Avoid sections with only one sub-section
    3. The chapter could have benefited from a more developed Overview and Conclusion, with clearer focus question(s) (Overview) and take-home self-help message for each focus question (Conclusion).
    4. Obtaining (earlier) comments on a more complete chapter plan and/or chapter draft could have helped to improve the chapter.
  2. Learning features
    1. Adding interwiki links would make the text more interactive.
    2. Quiz questions are used, but none are about the effect of tDCS on motivation
    3. No links to other chapters were provided
    4. No external links were provided
  3. Spelling, grammar and proofreading
    1. Check and correct use of ownership apostrophes e.g., individuals -> individual's
    2. The grammar for some sentences could be improved - see the [grammar?] tags
    3. Use Australian spelling e.g., hypothesize -> hypothesise
    4. Abbreviations (such as e.g., i.e.., etc.) should only be used inside parentheses.
  4. APA style
    1. When there are three or more authors, cite all authors for the first citation and then subsequent citations should use et al. e.g., Smith, Bush and Western (2001) and then cite Smith et al. (2001).
    2. Citations have some sometimes been incorrectly put into parentheses when they are intended as a grammatical part of the sentence.
    3. References are not in full APA style (e.g., include italics)
    4. Do not include issue numbers for journals which are continuously numbered within volumes.

Multimedia feedback

The accompanying multimedia presentation has been marked according to the marking criteria. Marks are available via the unit's Moodle site. Written feedback is provided below, plus see the general feedback page. Responses to this feedback can be made by starting a new section below. If you would like further clarification about the marking or feedback, contact the unit convener.

Overall

[edit source]
  1. Overall, this is a basic, but sufficient presentation.
  1. Promising start
  2. Content feedback about the book chapter also apply
  3. What is the key theory? (hint: probably not Maslow's hierarchy of needs!)
  4. What is the key research?
  5. Limited use of citations
  6. Little in the way of practical, take-home messages
  1. Excellent speaking voice - well paced, very good intonation, and easy to listen to.
  2. Images could be beneficial to help show what tDCS involves.
  1. Basic, but effect text-based narrative slides
  2. Use title and sub-title
  3. Hide screencastify button at bottom
