Chapter review and feedback

[edit source]

This chapter has been reviewed according to the marking criteria. Written feedback is provided below, plus there is a general feedback page. Please also check the chapter's page history to check for editing changes made whilst reviewing through the chapter. Responses to this feedback can be made by starting a new section below and/or contacting the reviewer. Chapter marks will be available later via Moodle, along with social contribution marks and feedback. Keep an eye on Announcements.

Overall

[edit source]
  1. Overall, this is a rather strange chapter. It does not directly and specifically provide a cogent summary of the best available psychological theory and research about the effect of joy and learning. There is a lot of tangential material and it remains how clear what is known in psychology about joy and learning.
  2. For additional feedback, see these copyedits.
  1. Maybe provide an example or case study in the Overview to help illustrate how joy might affect learning.
  2. The discussion of self determination theory and broaden-and-build theory seems to be only loosely connected to the chapter topic.
  3. It is surprising that this chapter doesn't embed links to, and build on, the 2017 chapter about emotion and learning - have added it to the See also section.
  4. The emotion of joy isn't defined.
  5. It is not clear why this chapter focuses on technology-based learning, although this educational modality could be used as an example.
  6. The "applications" need some introduction, explanation, and summary - why have they been selected and what do they illustrate about the relationship between joy and learning?
  1. The Introduction was difficult to follow - it dives straight into discussing Huang (2011) without any explanatory context.
  2. It is unclear how Table 2 helps to explain the relationship between joy and learning - explain.
  3. What are the most important half-a-dozen research studies about the effect of joy on learning? It isn't clear that these have been identified and systematically reviewed within this chpater.
  4. When describing important research findings, indicate the size of effects in addition to whether or not there was an effect or relationship.
  5. Greater emphasis on major reviews and meta-analyses would be helpful.
  1. Layout
    1. Consider renaming "Introduction" to a more specifically named section that conveys information about the content to the reader.
  2. Learning features
    1. There are better interwiki links that could be used for SDT and its components, such as the Wikipedia article on this topic.
    2. Perhaps some more concrete, simple examples of joy and learning could be added. Much of the description is quite abstract.
  3. Spelling, grammar, and proofreading
    1. Use Australian spelling - e.g., hypothesize -> hypothesise
  4. APA style
    1. The Figures did not seem to be directly related to the topic - joy and learning. Provide captions that help to show the direct relevance of the image to the chapter topic.
    2. Citations
      1. When a citation has two authors, do not use a comma before the "and" or ampersand (&).
      2. In-text citations should be in alphabetical order
    3. References are not in full APA style e.g.,
      1. See new doi format
