Talk:Motivation and emotion/Book/2013/Alcohol and university student motivation
Add topicHello there, So I was reading your book chapter and it was very interesting because alcohol is a big problem among the university lifestyle. I have found some other resources to help with information on your idea with alcohol and university students.
The reference is : Olthuis, J. K. (2011). The Utility of a Gender-Specific Definition of Binge Drinking on the AUDIT. Journal Of American College Health, 59(4), 239-245.

Any cultural differences?
[edit source]Hi Gail! I'm happy to see your book chapter, it was a very interesting topic!
In my country (South Korea), uni students drink alcohol heavily.
Alcohol and university student is a serious problem in Korea. Some students die because of the alcohol!!!!
We have a culture to drink a lot in university.
Here are some interesting journal articles:
Yoon, Y. S., Oh, S. W., Baik, H. W., Park, H. S., & Kim, W. Y. (2004). Alcohol consumption and the metabolic syndrome in Korean adults: the 1998 Korean National Health and Nutrition
Examination Survey. The American journal of clinical nutrition, 80(1), 217-224.
Caetano, R., Clark, C. L., & Tam, T. (1998). Alcohol consumption among racial/ethnic minorities. Alcohol health and research world, 22(4), 233-241.
Park, H. S., Oh, S. W., Cho, S. I., Choi, W. H., & Kim, Y. S. (2004). The metabolic syndrome and associated lifestyle factors among South Korean adults. International Journal of
Epidemiology, 33(2), 328-336.
So, I guess eastern university students tend to drink more than western university students?
Good luck on editing your wiki page!

Potential References
[edit source]Hi, I have just finished a lit review on alcohol and personality. I was thinking you might be able to look at some underlying personality factors which might motivate to people to drink? Here are some of the references that I found particularly helpful. Some are stats on Australian alcohol use in general and others are a few studies. Hope some of it is helpful to you!

Hi Gail
[edit source]There should be a lot of research on this topic. Go girl!! Miss Lyn 12 (discuss • contribs)
Motivation to overcome alcoholism
[edit source]Hello, I was just wondering if instead of the effects of alcohol on motivation, if perhaps there could potentially be motivations to overcome alcoholism? In addition to that, what types of motivation would one need to overcome alcoholism? Just a few thoughts :) good luck! Pheonix (discuss • contribs) 11:30, 15 October 2013 (UTC)
Alcohol and coping
[edit source]Hi Gail Well done so far. In looking for the Ways of Coping scale for my chapter, I found this version which has been adapted for the treatment of alcholism. Not sure if it will be what you are looking for, but thought it may be of interest. Ways of coping scale - alcoholism. Miss Lyn 12 (discuss • contribs) 03:04, 27 October 2013 (UTC)
legal age limits and geographical differences
[edit source]Hey there, this page is looking great, and I definitely feel that your page is relevant to my life! I have one possible thought/suggestion: I was just wondering if there is an effect of legal age for drinking on university student motivation. Particularly in Australia with our legal age being 18, and the USA with their age being 21 (I've noticed you've referred to a few US articles is why I ask). I'd also just be generally interested in whether alcohol use in Australian university students differs compared with other countries that perhaps don't necessarily have the "drinking culture" that we have. Just a thought, and good luck with the rest of your chapter! :) Ashkrance (discuss • contribs) 03:57, 28 October 2013 (UTC)
Help with linking existing articles
[edit source]Hi, I saw in your additional information category you linked at 2011 chapter on alcohol. Heres a way to make the link more wiki-friendly (if you go to edit above you'll be able to copy paste the text between the breaks

Alcohol and Self-Handicapping
[edit source]Hi, Your book chapter is looking great and I really enjoyed reading through it. I was just wondering about the motive of self-handicapping and alcohol. I found this article on google scholar about how students who feel they aren't competent enough drink alcohol so that they have an excuse later on as to why they didn't do well in their study. Just thought that it may be something useful to consider. http://ethicstalk.cmich.edu/selfhandicap.pdf Victoriagc (discuss • contribs) 14:05, 30 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi Gail, your chapter looks great! I was particularly interested in the correlation found between anxiety problems and binge drinking problems, I would have been more inclined to think of a correlation existing between depression and drinking. Hi Gail. Sorry I put some comments on your personal page this afternoon, rather than here. Miss Lyn 12 (discuss • contribs) 08:25, 1 November 2013 (UTC)
Boxes
[edit source]Hi Gail, as per your request I added boxes to your chapter. I made your sections green with blue boxes inside of them for your fun activities. If you don't like them just remove the code that looks like this "RoundBoxBottom|theme=3".
Or if you want to change the colour check out my guide on moodle http://learnonline.canberra.edu.au/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=248373#p637451

Feedback :)
[edit source]Hi Gail,
Just taking a break from my own chapter for 5 mins, so had read over yours! Looks great and really interesting, only suggestion is finding a way to break up your text maybe? i remember your moodle post wanting to add more pictures but maybe you could add in some relevant quotes or case study/examples just to break up all the info? :)
Also perhaps your additional links/info part could be change to the 'see also' or 'external links' sections? if i remember correctly i think James preferred that layout?
But overall looks great!! :)

Minor feedback
[edit source]Hi Gail, Your chapter is looking really good and super interesting! I did find one little thing you may want to fix in the overview where it says "...student's alcohol consumption by thorough empirical research..." maybe change it to just "... through empirical research..." anyway hope that minor contribution helped. Loving your chapter :) Bilbo Baggins (discuss • contribs)
Minor feedback
[edit source]Hey Gail, really enjoyed reading your chapter! Just one minor point the first sentence, doesnt quite read properly - 'Luckily, in our Western society, university students can decide what particular goal they want to pursue, or how much they want to pursue or not any particular goal.' --Jetlyn Payne (discuss • contribs) 11:55, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

Hi Gail Great chapter! I am doing illicit drugs and motivation, and came to see what you had done. I hope my chapter can be as good as yours. I particularly like the goal setting quiz you have included. I gave it a go and was pretty accurate in describing myself. Good luck- Nathan.Etheredge

Overall[edit source]Overall a good attempt, see comments below for feedback This chapter covered numerous theoretical ideas on why university students use alcohol, well done. For future improvement, maybe focus more deeply on one or two of these models to add more substance to the chapter. Critical analysis of the perspectives and models reviewed would also benefit the chapter. The chapter used the research covered well, good work. For future improvement, I believe a wider coverage of the literature would be beneficial. Again, critical analysis is necessary to improve the chapter further The learning features included figures which added “pop” to the page, and the link to the quiz was a great idea, well done. For future improvement, include some in text links. The chapter could benefited from some more “self help application” – i.e, the research has been covered, now how do we use it to help students overcome drinking issues? The written expression and flow was awkward at times, it can be useful to have someone read over the work thoroughly before submission. The APA style could use some revision. I recommend refreshing in text citation rules – need an author and a year. Remember to use APA format for all figures and inclusion of DOI’s and web addresses for all references. Great job! Overall[edit source]Overall, a great effort. See comments below for feedback The presentation covered the main points of the chapter, good job. There was a good coverage of motivational theory. For future improvement, incorporate more of the research studies used in the chapter to add more balance. The presentation made good use of images, well done. The voice over was clear. For future improvement, include some real world applications and more of the self help tone to engage the viewer The quality of the presentation was sound, and it made effective use of basic tools. The audio quality was fairly sound, though there was constant “clicking” sounds – could this be the keyboard being pressed to move the presentation slides forward?. Remember to include references and licensing info. Good effort! Courtney.reis (discuss • contribs) |
