Yr Iaith Gymraeg The Welsh Language

Iaith Brythonaidd yw'r Gymraeg. Mae hi'n perthyn i gangen yr iaith Geltaidd a oedd yn cael ei siarad dros y rhan fwyaf o Brydain o gynhanes hyd oresgyniadau'r Sacsoniaid (tua 450-700 OC). Mae hi'n agos iawn i Lydaweg (Llydaw:Breizh) a Chernyweg (Cernyw:Kernow) a hefyd yn perthyn i'r ieithoedd Celtaidd eraill, Gaeleg yr Alban, Gwyddeleg a Manaweg (yr Alban, Iwerddon ac Ynys Manaw) (Y grŵp Goidelig).

Welsh is a Brythonic language belonging to the branch of Celtic spoken over most of Britain from prehistoric times until the Saxon invasions (c450-700 CE). It is closely related to Breton]] (Brittany:Breizh) and Cornish (Cornwall:Kernow) and more distantly to the other surviving Celtic languages, Scottish Gaelic, Irish Gaelic and Manx Gaelic (Scotland, Ireland, Isle of Man) (The Goidelic group).

Hanes yr Iaith Gymraeg History of the Welsh Language

Mae'r Gymraeg yn cael ei siarad fel iaith gyntaf yng Nghymru, gan rai yn Lloegr ar y ffin ac yn y Wladfa yn Nyffryn Chubut ym Mhatagonia yr Ariannin a Chile.

Welsh is spoken natively in Wales (Cymru), in England by some along the Welsh border and in the Welsh immigrant colony in the Chubut Valley in Argentine and Chilean Patagonia.

Mae siaradwyr Cymraeg dros bedwar ban y byd hefyd, yn bennaf yng ngweddill Prydain, Unol Daleithiau America, Awstralia a Seland Newydd.

There are also speakers of Welsh throughout the world, most notably in the rest of Great Britain, the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Oherwydd cynnydd yr iaith Saesneg yng Nghymru, roedd nifer y siaradwyr Cymraeg yn gostwng ers degawdau. Er hynny, yn sgil llwyddiant sawl mesur, gan gynnwys cyflwyno Deddf yr Iaith Gymraeg ym 1993, mae'r Gymraeg wedi cael adfywiad cryf yn fwy diweddar. Erbyn hyn mae ganddi statws cyfartal â'r Saesneg yn y sector cyhoeddus yng Nghymru. Naill ai hi neu'r iaith Lydaweg yw'r iaith Geltaidd â'r nifer mwyaf o siaradwyr. Mae 62% o'r 611,000 sy'n siarad Cymraeg yn dweud eu bod nhw'n defnyddio'r iaith bob dydd, ac 88% o'r siaradwyr rhugl sy'n ei defnyddio bob dydd.

Due to the increasing use of the English language the numbers of Welsh speakers had been declining for decades. However, following a number of measures, including the introduction of the Welsh Language Act 1993, Welsh has enjoyed a strong revival in recent years and has an equal status with English in the public sector in Wales. It competes with Breton (a close relative spoken in France) as the most-spoken Celtic language. 62% of the 611,000 Welsh speakers in Wales claim to use Welsh daily, and 88% of the ones fluent in the language use it daily.
