I really think "French" should be a Topic, and much of this material may belong (or exist in!) wikibooks. As such, I'm moving this page to Topic:French, where it can have more specific courses/projects (you're not going to want the entire French language, including its literature, etc., on one page). French Mentoring Program

I just had an idea, while looking at the French stream.

We have a lot of people interested in learning the language, and a lot of people interested in helping out. I was thinking, "Why don't we set up a mentoring program," where people who want to learn the language sign up, and then get them set up with a mentor, with whom they can exchange emails or IMs, practicing the language (especially for the more advanced users), and answering questions and stuff. Sorry for the delayed response; I've been busy with other stuff, and needed a whack to drop back over here. We have an interactive voice system we've been playing with. It's not perfect, and it doesn't have a permanent home, but we're getting there. Wikiversity:Sandbox Server is our project to get it a real home. Not just record .. you could do that with a simple audio capture. The idea is to allow an exchange between people ... hopefully between a more skilled speaker and a less skilled one. I can volunteer to be the less skilled one, I doubt there are many less so. :)
Eventually it could be interactive, but we could start it as drop and store ... I record now, you listen in 10 hours, and record what I've done wrong, corrections, and maybe something for me to translate. That is my idea.. what do you think? Historybuff 00:52, 23 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, it wouldn't be random people ... hopefully we could figure out a pairing system of some sort. Policy for the thing isn't hard to make, but we have to have some people willing to work at the tech a bit first. Also -- when you take a course, you are going to be in a discussion forum with "random people" (whether in a physcial school or a virtual one) ... what would be the difference? I think this is a great idea, although I do not have Skype, or even a microphone! I have five years of college French, so I'd like to think I'm fairly fluent by now, haha. (Not perfect though; I think only native speakers can ever be that). I'd love to converse with a student via IM and/or e-mail to help them out. Where/how do I sign up??? Organization of French courses

Hello, I'm new in the French stream. I read the courses, and well, I'm sorry but according to me, maybe it is a little bit too...how can I say.... Maybe it's not easy, for those who are beginners, to directly start with a dialog. I mean, when you start learning a language, maybe it would be better to know the alphabet, the pronunciation, well, those things. And then, you can learn with some little dialogs, etc.
What dou you think about that ? I saw that the alphabet is written after the first dialog, and I don't think that it's really logical. Poulpette 12:54, 18 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your feedback. I'm not the developer of the material, but I think the idea here is to get you "doing" something early in the course, and get you interested and doing practical things upfront. As the alphabet is quite similar to English (and this is EN wikiversity), I think it shouldn't be too big a stretch to assume most know the letters, if not the French Names of the letters. Status of Topic

It seems like it got off to a great start but has recently (in the past four months or so) stalled. What's the current status? Does anyone have any ideas? I'd love to help make this the best language topic there is, but I'll need help. I've discovered that in a smaller wiki, there are moments of extreme action and then quiet times. It's just the cycle that people go through. I'm still interested in helping -- I was hoping to (technically) facilitate a conversational component, as well as hoping to improve my own French. Feel free to brainstorm though. I'm looking for comments here...What if all foreign language learning topics were structured such that it is the ultimate goal of the foreign language program to provide the learner a strong enough base to begin study in the native-speaker curriculum. Further, the native-speaker curriculum would coordinate with the foreign language program to begin at a universal and sufficiently remedial level as to accomodate the foreign speaker. This has not been practical in the geographically limited learning environment of brick-and-mortar schools, but it seems intuitive here in our tele-universe. Any thoughts? Sure. Be bold. The problem with using French-language resources is that this requires a native level of comprehension in the language, at least to the extent the resource may have been designed. Not a bad idea if you have a fairly strong basic grasp on the language, but I don't know that there's necessarily anything we can do here in that regard that couldn't be done in person. Just peeking in again. I'm going to push to get some basic audio (conversational) pieces put together. I'm hoping to get them over the next month, but it depends on schedules and volunteers to do the audio recordings. I'd like to see a flow between the wiki pages and the audio bits. Bonjour à tous,

Je m'appelle Chris. Je suis américain mais j'ai étudié le français à l'université depuis 7 ans. Quoique je ne serai jamais parfait, à mon avis je me débrouille assez bien en français pour mériter enseigner une classe ici au sujet de la littérature française. J'envisage des choses pour cette classe, mais étant débutant chez Wikiversity, je ne suis pas sûr de comment la naviguer, créer les pages, etc. Donc, j'ai besoin d'aide à incorperer mes idées d'après le cadre du site. Est-ce que quelqu'un peut m'y aider ?

Mentoring, Revisited

So, I'm thinking about starting up that Mentoring Program. What I currently have in mind for it is that we take the users over at French stream, and match them up, with more skilled mentors taking on more skilled students, and less skilled mentors taking on less skilled students. I would be contacting everyone over at the Stream, asking if they want to be involved in the Mentoring program. If yes, we'll have them sign up at the mentoring program. Once we have people signed up, we'll contact them and tell learners who their mentors are, and mentors who their students are. Then, Mentors can help out the students in various ways:

  • By answering questions about the language
  • By simply engaging in discussion in French with eachother (using audio, or simply in text form)
  • By recommending reading materials or coursework
  • By giving corrections
  • By giving specific instruction/teaching.

Now, a Mentor might not do all of these things, but could do any of these things, depending on what the Mentor is willing to do and what is most effective for his pupils. Comments? Suggestions? Questions? The Jade Knight (d'viser) 20:34, 14 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
