  • Seems to have a reasonable citation rate and clearly has some experiance with publishing based on Google Scholar. I would imagine that in a 20 odd year professional career this has included much reviewing as the candidate states. Cross-wiki check shows 13 edits across all wikis, so has not done much on Wikimedia however that is not necessary.
    I will tentatively support.
Cheers Scott Thomson (Faendalimas) talk 00:51, 16 October 2019 (UTC)
    • Symbol oppose vote.svg Oppose on further thought Editorial Board I cannot support at this time, maybe for Associate Editor, but not Board. Cheers Scott Thomson (Faendalimas) talk 18:45, 18 October 2019 (UTC)
  • Symbol oppose vote.svg Oppose for now. Nothing really open in the "open" expericence apparently. The applicant could prove me wrong by giving more details, and links to his openly available contributions. Failing that, please consider getting some experience by contributing to Wikipedia or sister projects, blogging, publishing in this journal, etc. Sylvain Ribault (discusscontribs) 07:46, 16 October 2019 (UTC)
  • Symbol oppose vote.svg Oppose as an editorial board member for now. Their technical background is very interesting, however additional experience in either an editorial role or as an open knowledge contributor has been the bar for previous board members. However, we have had associate editors gain experience by assisting a board member with submitted manuscripts within their area of expertise. T.Shafee(Evo﹠Evo)talk 10:09, 17 November 2019 (UTC)
  • Symbol oppose vote.svg Oppose per Sylvain Ribault and Thomas Shafee. Chiswick Chap (discusscontribs) 10:13, 17 November 2019 (UTC)

Editorial board application of Mad Price Ball[edit]

Mad Price Ball PhD (website)
Areas of expertise: Genomic & biotechnology, health and human subjects research, citizen science & peer production, self-research / quantified self, research use of personal data

Professional - working with participatory communities & peer production, interdisciplinary experience assisting diverse projects using personal data (genetic, activity/device, GPS/location, symptom tracking, etc.), background in science with biotech development & genome sequencing (grad school in Wikipedia:George M. Church's lab)
Publishing - not much; only served as a reviewer for several papers over the years
Open - * Wikipedia experiences + other stuff...
  • ~2007-2008ish various Wikipedia contributions of articles and images and content
  • I created the article list using traffic stats, and the "landing page" for the app
  • Over a million children used this! It was a bursty contribution that leveraged my expertise and had great impact. My spouse reflected on it in 2013, there's a touching 5 minute video about the power of Wikipedia
  • 2014 - present: co-founded Open Humans, currently lead as Executive Director & President
  • Occasional contribution to open source projects (e.g. [1])

I confirm that I will act in accordance with the policies of the WikiJournal of Science. Mad Price Ball (discusscontribs) 20:55, 21 November 2019 (UTC)

  • Symbol support vote.svg Support - Very interesting cross-disciplinary background. Their work with Open Humans should give a particularly valuable perspective from a Open Data point of view. Although they do not have particular academic publishing experience, the other aspects of their background will help inform on other open data projects. T.Shafee(Evo﹠Evo)talk 04:29, 22 November 2019 (UTC)
  • Symbol support vote.svg Support - Welcome aboard! The individual has been a co-author on at least four journal articles on open publishing and personal genomic data. --Marshallsumter (discusscontribs) 12:41, 22 November 2019 (UTC)
  • Symbol support vote.svg Support - interesting experiences should bring more breadth to the board. Cheers Scott Thomson (Faendalimas) talk 07:58, 24 November 2019 (UTC)
  • Symbol support vote.svg Support - What a welcome breadth of relevant experience, including of Wikipedia. Ideally placed for this role. Chiswick Chap (discusscontribs) 10:28, 24 November 2019 (UTC)
  • Symbol support vote.svg Support - Having Mad Price Ball involved would be fantastic. I'm currently doing a PhD about public involvement in genomic research - and we need more people who are literate and knowledgeable in this area in order to ensure the WikiJournals are relevant and useful as this area will expand exponentially. On a personal level - I'd be very interested in learning more about the work of Open Humans as it's a project I've followed for years with interest! (The preceding unsigned comment was added by Jacknunn (talkcontribs) 02:45, 25 November 2019‎)

Result: Accepted into the editorial board.

  • Symbol support vote.svg Support It'll be valuable to have additional physics experience on the board, and their background with an open journal from IOP Publishing is particularly relevant. As always, though Wikipedia experience is not essential, it is definitely useful and their contributions have been v relevant. T.Shafee(Evo﹠Evo)talk 02:45, 19 December 2019 (UTC)
