Chapter review and feedback[edit source]

This chapter has been reviewed according to the marking criteria. Written feedback is provided below, plus there is a general feedback page. Please also check the chapter's page history to check for editing changes made whilst reviewing through the chapter. Chapter marks will be available via UCLearn along with social contribution marks and feedback. Keep an eye on Announcements.

Overall[edit source]

  1. Overall, this is a solid, interesting chapter that is disciplined in its focus.
  2. It could be improved, but abbreviating the introductory material and expanding the review of key research findings.
  3. The chapter makes very good use of a variety of integrated learning features.
  4. For additional feedback, see the following comments and these copyedits.

Overview[edit source]

  1. Solid overview.
  2. A bit too wordy - see my copyedits.
    1. A case study could help to engage reader interest.
  3. Clear focus question(s). However, the structure of the chapter doesn't really follow the focus questions.

Theory — Breadth[edit source]

  1. There was too much "preamble" material following the Overview. The chapter started to really address the topic in a meaningful way with the section "What is the relationship between materialism and psychological well-being?" - this is a very good section and could be expanded (e.g., to explain theory (e.g., about values) and cited research in more detail) although it is unclear though how this section was meant to differ from "How does materialism influence and affect psychological well-being?" (seems like basically the same heading?).
  2. Maslow's hierarchy of needs is well explained and, more importantly, applied throughout the chapter.
  3. A useful framework for understanding psychological well-being is also provided.

Theory — Depth[edit source]

  1. Overall, the chapter provides an indepth exploration of why and how materialism can influence well-being.
  2. The chapter is nuanced (good), reflecting the complexity of the relationship, yet also emerges with a clear answer and reasons for the answer.
  3. Very good depth.
  4. I liked that the chapter stayed focused on the topic and didn't wander off.

Research — Key findings[edit source]

  1. Although relevant research is cited, too little detail is provided about the research.

Research — Critical thinking[edit source]

  1. Some claims are unreferenced (e.g., see the [factual?] tags).
  2. When describing important research findings, include more detail about the methodology (e.g., sample, measures) and results (e.g., size of effect or relationship).

Integration[edit source]

  1. Discussion of theory and research is well integrated.
  2. More detail about the research would help.

Conclusion[edit source]

  1. The chapter benefited from a well developed Conclusion, with clear take-home messages.
  2. The last couple of sentences about research directions are too vague/general.

Written expression — Style[edit source]

  1. Written expression
    1. Overall, the quality of written expression is very good.
    2. The main area for potential improvement is towards using simpler words and shorter sentences.
    3. Figures are well used
      1. Refer to each Figure at least once within the main text (e.g., see Figure 1).
    4. Citations use correct APA style.
    5. References use very good APA style.
    6. Interwiki links are very well used.
    7. A simple quiz was provided - ideally, it would be about the take-home messages.

Written expression — Learning features[edit source]

  1. ~2 very minor, logged, social contributions with direct links to evidence.

Multimedia feedback

The accompanying multimedia presentation has been marked according to the marking criteria. Marks are available via the unit's UCLearn site. Written feedback is provided below, plus see the general feedback page. Responses to this feedback can be made by starting a new section below. If you would like further clarification about the marking or feedback, contact the unit convener.

Overall[edit source]

  1. Overall, this is a basic presentation.
  2. The presentation is over the maximum time limit - content beyond 3 mins is ignored for marking and feedback purposes.

Overview[edit source]

  1. An opening slide with the title and sub-title is presented. Also narrate the sub-title - this helps to clearly convey the purpose of the presentation.
  2. Briefly explain why this topic is important.
  3. Consider asking focus questions that lead to take-away messages.

Content[edit source]

  1. Comments about the book chapter may also apply to this section.
  2. The presentation addresses the topic.
  3. There is too much content, in too much detail, presented within the allocated time frame. Zoom out and provide a higher-level presentation at a slower pace. It is best to cover a small amount of well-targetted content than a large amount of poorly selected content.
  4. The presentation makes basic use of relevant psychological theory.
  5. The presentation makes little to no use of relevant psychological research.
  6. The presentation could be improved by making more use of examples or case studies.
  7. Check and correct spelling (e.g., efferects -> effects; infulence -> influence).

Conclusion[edit source]

  1. A Conclusion slide is presented with good take-home message(s).

Audio[edit source]

  1. The audio is somewhat hard to follow because so much content is presented so quickly.
  2. The presentation makes basic use of narrated audio.
  3. Consider slowing down and leaving longer pauses between sentences. This can help the viewer to cognitively digest the information that has just been presented before moving on to the next point.
  4. Good intonation enhances listener interest and engagement.
  5. Audio recording quality was OK. There is some variation between slides.
  6. The pauses before and after the first slide seem to be too long - the presentation main body doesn't start until 0:22 secs.

Video[edit source]

  1. Overall, visual display quality is basic.
  2. The presentation makes basic use of text and image based slides.
  3. The font size is sufficiently large to make it easy to read.
  4. The amount of text presented per slide makes it reasonably easy to read and listen at the same time.
  5. The visual communication is supplemented by images and/or diagrams.
  6. The presentation is basically produced using simple tools.

Meta-data[edit source]

  1. The chapter sub-title but not the chapter title is used in the name of the presentation - the latter would help to clearly convey the purpose of the presentation.
  2. A written description of the presentation is provided.
  3. Links to and from the book chapter are provided.

Licensing[edit source]

  1. Image sources and their copyright status are not provided. Either provide details about the image sources and their copyright licenses in the presentation description or remove the presentation.
  2. A copyright license for the presentation is provided.
