Comments[edit source]

Hi I have found a very interesting article that you may find helpful to begin your chapter. It is titled: Why do they do it? A qualitative interpretive meta-synthesis of crisis volunteers' motivations. It can be accessed through the university library website using EBSCOhost http://web.b.ebscohost.com.ezproxy.canberra.edu.au/ehost/detail/detail?vid=4&sid=c07aa440-0b2a-4f0f-929f-c2ca31c2f455%40sessionmgr105&hid=116&bdata=#AN=93680595&db=heh The information in the introduction will help you with your definition and overview sections and also see page 328 for information regarding Maslow's hierarchy of needs which you could use for one of your main theoretical framework headings. The study yielded 6 themes which you could discuss throughout your chapter including:

  • internal motivation to make an external difference
  • volunteer existentialism
  • lived experience
  • internal/ personal fulfilment
  • lack of support
  • lack of direction

I hope this is helpful for you, best of luck! --LeoDean1993 (discusscontribs) 09:25, 9 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Heading casing[edit source]

FYI, the convention on Wikiversity is for lower-cased headings. For example, use:

==Cats and dogs==

rather than

==Cats and Dogs==

Chapter review and feedback

This chapter has been reviewed according to the marking criteria. Written feedback is provided below, plus there is a general feedback page. Please also check the chapter's page history to check for editing changes made whilst reviewing through the chapter. Responses to this feedback can be made by starting a new section below and/or contacting the reviewer. Chapter marks will be available later via Moodle, along with social contribution marks and feedback. Keep an eye on Announcements.

Overall[edit source]

  1. Overall, this is a solid chapter which successfully integrates theory and research to address the question.
  2. For more feedback see these copyedits and the comments below.

Theory[edit source]

  1. In the Overview, provide a clearer outline about the role of egoism vs. altruism in volunteering. And there is no mention of the functional perspective?
  2. Abbreviate the general theoretical material about volunteering and provide references and links to further information (e.g., related chapters and Wikipedia articles). This would allow greater emphasis on addressing the specific topic in the title and subtitle.
  3. Addition of case studies or additional examples could be helpful.
  4. Functional perspective is well used as a theoretical framework.

Research[edit source]

  1. Several useful and appropriate studies are discussed and integrated with a functional perspective of volunteering.
  2. When describing important research studies, provide some indication of the nature of the method.
  3. When discussing important research findings, indicate the size of effects in addition to whether or not there was an effect or relationship.

Written expression[edit source]

  1. Written expression
    1. Write for an international, not just an Australian, audience.
    2. Write in third person rather than first person (e.g., avoid "I', "we", "our", "your" etc.).
    3. Some paragraphs are overly long. Each paragraph should communicate one key idea in three to five sentences.
  2. Layout
    1. See earlier comments about heading casing
  3. Learning features
    1. Add Interwiki links (e.g., to relevant Wikipedia articles and other Wikiversity book chapters) to make the text more interactive.
    2. Quiz questions could be used to encourage reader engagement.
  4. APA style
    1. The reference list is not in full APA style.
    2. Check and correct the APA style formatting of in-text citations.
    3. Use APA style for table and figure captions.

Multimedia feedback

The accompanying multimedia presentation has been marked according to the marking criteria. Marks are available via the unit's Moodle site. Written feedback is provided below, plus see the general feedback page. Responses to this feedback can be made by starting a new section below. If you would like further clarification about the marking or feedback, contact the unit convener.

Overall[edit source]

  1. Overall, this is a very basic presentation.

Structure and content[edit source]

  1. Overview
    1. Limited
    2. Use the Overview to set up the problem to be solved (the question i.e., the subtitle for the book chapter).
    3. Tell the listener what they will find out about if they watch this presentation.
  2. Selection and organisation
    1. Overly focused on the Volunteer Functions framework which differs from the egoism vs. altruism question
    2. Basic coverage of VF theory.
    3. No coverage of research.
    4. Perhaps consider using more illustrative examples.
    5. Only a brief mention in the conclusion of what can be said in relation to the question.
    6. Citations and references are included.
  3. Conclusion
    1. No convincing theoretical or research basis presented for the Conclusion.
    2. A Conclusion slide summarising the take-home messages / key points could be helpful.

Communication[edit source]

  1. Audio
    1. Audio is too fast to easily comprehend - consider slowing down. See this article for more information about speaking rates.
    2. Leave longer pauses between sentences.
    3. Consider using greater intonation to enhance engagement.[1]
  2. Image/Video
    1. Increase font size to make text easier to read; reduce the amount of text.
    2. Consider including more images, figures, and/or tables.
    3. The combination of images and text is effective.

Production quality[edit source]

  1. Overall, basic production.
  2. Meta-data
    1. Rename the title so that it includes the subtitle (and matches the book chapter).
    2. Link to chapter provided.
    3. Good use of the Description field to provide relevant information.
  3. Audio recording quality
    1. A fair bit of white noise - consider using an external microphone to improve audio recording quality.
  4. Image/video recording quality
    1. Effective use of simple tools.
  5. Licensing
    1. The stated license in the description doesn't match the selected youtube license.
    2. The copyright licenses and sources of the images are indicated.
