Information Flow

Frankly, I'm a little frustrated trying to understand what is supposed to be happening in this (language) division.

When I originally signed up for Spanish I, I was under the impression that assignments were being given and taken. If one looks around at various talk pages, you can see that others are under the same impression as me.

Students continue to sign up (,if they can find the now-stealth Student Registration page,) while others are confused as to how to register. Yet the main pages in the Division and for the course say that the classes are seeking students.

In a discussion with user Fturner1, instructor J.Steinbock states:

Yes, the classes should not be looking for students as of yet.

That's all well and good. However, if that is the case, why not state that at the main pages of the courses so that people have some idea what to expect.

I can understand your frustration. I posted those comments because I had an initial plan to carry out the class, but I need time and additional contributors to help establish the program. I second Rayc's comments on the matter. -- J.Steinbock 02:58, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

reorganize Category:Spanish and fix links

I see to way how we can recategorize Category:Spanish. Kill or copy the former subpages of Spanish is needed. Then we can categorize other stuff under Spanish using the character /:

1. everything goes unders Spanish

1. stuff is categorized according SNS or SFS via:

• Spanish/SNS/…
• Spanish/SFS/…

Well SNS is Spanish for native speakers and SFS is Spanish for foreign speakers. Maybe for transitive and other pagese third branch could be added:

Color scheme for this page

This page's color scheme is incredibly hard on the eyes. I understand that it is appropriate for Spanish; however, perhaps the bright red and yellow could be limited so as not to assault students upon loading the page? 204.147.152.1 16:55, 15 June 2007 (UTC)Melanie Fletcher (mellowknees).

I wanted to learn Spanish; at first there was no class on WV, then after a while I found there was a course for self-teaching. Good. Only it doesn't work for me. I am basically an audio/visual learner; no matter how hard I tried to drill myself with "me llamo, te llamas, se llama," I still haven't absorbed it. At a minimum what I need is an interactive course with a soundtrack and a prompt screen, like a computerized typing lesson; ironically, you pointed something like that out with the chart for the apptitude test: some people find it easier that way.

As to how I know this: some years ago Jordan TV's foreign channel doubled as the educational channel mornings and afternoons. One afternoon I saw an animated German language lesson for children... and to my utter amazement I was absorbing the lesson on the spot and "das ist ein ritter" still evokes the image of an armored knight.

Yes, Shir-El toos idea is nice. I also tried to make something audiovisual, but most of my efforts werent started because of technical difficuties. How to link here and where to place disambiguation

I have one question to be discussed. Where we should place a disambiguation for Spanish courses and projects. We have here two pages:

• Topic:Spanish - this is a portal for Spanish Language department, we can link here from other projects and it can be graphicaly better organized, but it also includes a lot of background stuff in which participants looking for studying may be not interested. Actualy also one of the crucial problems, there are writen some people and they were not active much within the subject of Spanish (including me).
• Spanish - this is more like probable that the learners will find it when searching a course, we can also link it from other projects.

I agree with the nonsense of a disambiguation page. It is much better to have only one main page for the Spanish portal tidy and clear where people can find any information (and links) about this learning project. We have not enough material which justify a disambiguation page. On the other hand, I think of the names we are using here should be similar to the ones used in the others learning projects about languages. Akhram 01:54, 12 April 2008 (UTC).

Confirmed, in the Foreign Language Learning page are linked all the Language divisions, and the 'official name' for those pages is Topic:<language>. So, the disambiguation page Spanish should be merged with Topic:Spanish, if we decide it is useless. Akhram 02:09, 12 April 2008 (UTC).

Spanish Brainstorming

This is a brainstorming page on a topic, how to develop Spanish language courses at the Wikiversity. Spanish language courses are one of the most wanted units on Wikiversity; however, there is no progress in course development. The following brainstorming page is trying to find a wiki way, how to develop these courses.

ideas, questions, hints, experiences

Andy912's suggestion on the order of content for the Spanish lessons:

1. Introduction= Reasons to learn Spanish, its use if you know it, etc.
2. How to Read Spanish= A basic overview of reading and how Spanish is pronounced just as it's read.
3. Grammar/Vocabulary Lesson 1= The first "Grammar/Vocabulary Lesson". Being the first, it should introduce word order, types of sentences, and some very basic vocabulary (such as pronouns and, say, items in an office) The other lessons would be something like the first, too.

Coolman's suggestion is that wiki/Spanish requires more descriptions on the differences between various courses. Would like to see what separates them. If nothing can be separated then they should be merged/removed or marked as a competing course. Either way it should be clear. Forget skype/live teachers for now, just concentration on having some learning materials and tests.

Acceptations

Here is a suggestion/idea: we could develop a course titled: "The Fascinating World of Acceptions". That is a course that would permit the discussion of words that have different meanings, and subsequently would help build a more comprehensive vocabulary. Wow, progress is slow...

Goodness, i'm a bit taken aback at how very much of nothing is happening here! there may well be demand for courses, but i rather suspect that that demand - at a basic level at least - is being covered, and well covered, elsewhere! If anyone ever asks me about starting to learn spanish online, i always point them to the bbc stuff. Anyway, that leads me to two points:

• 1)perhaps wikiversity should concentrate on delivering spanish courses NOT available elsewhere i.e. intermediate/advanced language; literature etc.
• 2)using skype is a great idea to hook up learners with tutors, but it doesn't seem to have taken off. once the "spanish department" finds itself and a community builds up, however, it will develop naturally if it is going to develop at all. i'm not sure that it is beneficial for the "course" to demand it, it should be an add-on. i'm not debating its benefits, i just suspect that there may well be an imbalance of supply and demand. anyways, there are plenty of other places on the internet for people to hook up with "intercambios"
• 3) (yeah, i know, i said two points...sorry) audio-only courses in the style of michel thomas or pimsleur seem to be very successful at an introductory level, but i don't know of any "open" non-commercial versions and certainly can't find any (legal) stuff online to download - perhaps someone would be interested in collaborating on a project to develop a new, free audio-only spanish course?

Cooperate with the English Language Department at the Spanish Wikiversity

I noticed that there is also not much progress at the English language department in the Spanish version of Wikipedia. Perhaps if we help over there and they help over there we could both benefit? Each of us could bring our own strengths to bear. Here is their URL:
