Timeline[edit | edit source]

1876 July 10, Edmund Bernard Fitzalan-Howard's name was changed to Edmund Bernard Talbot by Royal License.[1]

1879 August 5, Edmund Talbot and Lady Mary Caroline Bertie married, both having the surname Talbot.[5]

1897 July 2, several members of the Talbot family attended the Duchess of Devonshire's fancy-dress ball at Devonshire House, including Edmund Talbot.

1921 June 9, Edmund Talbot was raised to the peerage and changed his name back to FitzAlan-Howard, and Lady Mary Talbot was styled Viscountess Fitzalan of Derwent.

Costume at the Duchess of Devonshire's 2 July 1897 Fancy-dress Ball[edit | edit source]

The Talbots who attended the Duchess of Devonshire's fancy-dress ball, some of whom are recorded on other pages, were the following:

  • Lord Edmund Talbot, at 123
  • Mrs. Talbot, at 258
  • General Talbot, at 451
  • attending with a Mrs. Talbot, at 485 [both need confirmation]
  • a Colonel Talbot, at 589
  • also attending with a Mrs. Talbot, at 590
  • Charles Cheywynd-Talbot is at 101
  • Theresa Chetwynd-Talbot Vane-Tempest-Stewart, the Marchioness of Londonderry is at 42

Edmund Talbot[edit | edit source]

Edmund Talbot (at 123) was dressed as a

  • "Gentleman of the Spanish Court of the early 17th Century."[6]:8, Col. 2a
  • "gentleman of the Spanish Court of the early seventeenth century."[7]:40, Col. 2a

Mrs. Talbot[edit | edit source]

Mrs. Talbot (at 258) was among the goddesses. Three Mrs. Talbots attended, but the other two seem connected to Chetwynd-Talbots; this one could have been Mary Caroline Bertie, wife of Edmund Talbot (at 123).

Questions and Notes[edit | edit source]

  1. According to the Wikipedia article on him, Edmund FitzAlan-Howard "assumed in 1876 by Royal licence the surname of 'Talbot' as part of an unsuccessful attempt to succeed to the estates of the Earl of Shrewsbury." The 17th Earl Shrewsbury left his estates to Edmund FitzAlan-Howard, but distant relatives contested the will and eventually won. He changed his name back in 1921, when he came into the peerage.
  2. He was called Lord Edmund Talbot because his father was the Duke of Norfolk; Lady Mary Bertie was Lady because her father was Earl of Abingdon.
  3. Was Lady Mary Bertie Talbot at the ball? She is not mentioned. She isn't likely to be Mrs. Talbot because her father was an Earl? She would have been Lady Talbot?
