Motivation and emotion book project overview

Overview

[edit | edit source]

The motivation and emotion book consists of over 1,800 online book chapters about how psychological science can be used to improve human lives. This work is published via Wikiversity, an open wiki platform supported by the Wikimedia Foundation. Third year undergraduate psychology students develop the chapters as a learning and assessment exercise for the motivation and emotion unit at the University of Canberra, Australia. Using open academic principles to engage students in collaborative authorship, emerging scholars create these open educational resources to develop and demonstrate their capacity to apply psychological theory and research to real-world problems.

Book theme:
Understanding and improving our motivational and emotional lives using psychological science

The vision

[edit | edit source]
Figure 1. Let's write something we would like to read.

Imagine you are at the airport, heading on a plane trip.

You have already checked in and are now waiting near the departure lounge. There’s a bit of time before boarding.

You get that cool, groovy kind of feeling when you’re leaving the familiar behind and at the beginning of a journey. Curious, you find yourself wandering into a nearby bookshop (see Figure 1).

As you browse the shelves, you feel drawn towards the Psychology/Self-help section.

Several of the titles arouse your interest. As you read the covers and flick through the pages you want to take several of them with you on your travels, to learn more about yourself and others.

This is the kind of book we are trying to write—interesting, readable, practical, and informed by psychological science.
