Overall[edit source]

  1. Overall, this was a very well constructed textbook chapter, congratulations. The theoretical aspects, in particular, were excellent, with broad, relevant, indepth coverage. Research aspects were less strong, but nevertheless still good. The presentation was excellent - the chapter was alive and interesting, with examples, captioned images, and rich learning activities. Written expression was generally good, but note below several minor suggestions for improvement.

Theory[edit source]

  1. The opening case study was engaging and clearly illustrated the two styles. However, be careful of falling into typing people as one or the other, when mostly optimisim-pessimism is conceptualised in psychology as a continuum.

Research[edit source]

  1. Some sections described theory without necessarily referring to relevant research.
  2. When describing important research findings, try to indicate the size of effects rather than simply whether or not there was an effect or relationship. e.g., "Pessimistic thinking is also highly correlated with depression" - how correlated?

Written expression[edit source]

  1. Overall, the chapter was very well prepared and presented.
  2. Avoid overdoing "As mentioned previously," and other directional references.
  3. Avoid mixing singular and plural e.g., "When someone has optimistic expectancies for their future, they are thinking positively."
  4. APA style
    1. Do not cite the year for subsequent citations within a paragraph e.g., Smith (2010) but after that in the same paragraph only refer to Smith.
    2. Use ampersand (&) inside brackets and "and" outside brackets.
    3. References were listed in excellent APA style.
  5. Images were well captioned.
  6. Good use of wiki-links.

  1. Overall, a solid, professional presentation.
  2. Use some more of the introduction to highlight the key purposes of this presentation and to establish why this is an important topic - what will a viewer get out of it if they keep watching?
  3. Clear voice, well paced
  4. Excellent animation of bullet-points
  5. Emphasis was on theory; there wasn't much in the way of research
  6. No images?
  7. Excellent licensing
