Chapter feedback

  1. Overall, this is a CR-level textbook chapter. It provides a introduction and overview of cultural aspects of emotion. I think it would have helped to develop focus questions for the chapter (I was never really quite sure where it was going). Thus, whilst much interesting theory and research content was covered, I was somewhat unclear about the overall structure. So, a more developed introduction (the case study was very useful) and a prose-based conclusion (rather than a dot point summary) would have been desirable. Getting comments on a chapter plan and/or chapter draft could have helped with this aspect. The clarity written expression reasonable, but someone convoluted in places. Proofreading and APA style were CR-level. See some specific suggestions below, plus check my edits to the chapter via its history page.

  1. Excellent example to open the chapter.
  2. It could be useful to establish some focus questions for the chapter.
  3. Spelling, grammar and proofreading
    1. Check use of question marks - some questions were asked without question marks.
    2. "Fessler suggests individuals" -> "Fessler suggests that individuals"; similarly "indicated classical shame" -> "indicated that classical shame"
    3. Check use of ownership apostrophes e.g., individuals -> individual's
    4. where as -> whereas
  4. APA style
    1. et al -> et al.
    2. In-text citations should be in alphabetical order
    3. When there are three or more authors, subsequent citations should use et al. e.g., Smith, Bush and Western (2001) and then in the next paragraph cite Smith et al. (2001).
  5. Images were captioned.
  6. Feature boxes were used.

  1. This presentation serves as an effective summary and introduction to the chapter.
  2. Excellent establishment of a single key question to focus the presentation. I would also like to know how the experience and expression of core emotions varies across cultures.
  3. Excellent use of case examples.
  4. Effective visual emphasis (not much text); images complement content'. But some basic words might help for each slide.
  5. Sound quality was clear.
  6. Slide titles should use larger font
  7. Image attribution?
  8. Copyright licensing?
  9. Could add an exercise - using the facial expressions in groups study
