We should teach advanced physics with minimum emphasis on mathematical methods because there is a growing trend towards allowing computers to do our mathematics for us.

We can teach this way because conceptual multiple choice questions can be written to give students confidence that they understand.

We need to emphasize confidence over understanding because people don't understand physics; they just get good at it. Traditional physics education focuses on proficiency in calculations and derivations of formulas. While this traditional view of demonstrating proficiency will always be first in importance, we can also explore ways for students to demonstrate proficiency by using computer models and correctly answering conceptual questions.
