Lady Emilie Farquhar[edit | edit source]

At the Duchess of Devonshire’s 1897 Duchess of Devonshire's fancy-dress ball, Lady Emilie Farquhar was dressed as Duchess de Mailly, Lady in Waiting to Queen Marie Antoinette.

Lafayette's portrait (right) of "Emilie (née Packe), Viscountess Farquhar as Duchess de Mailly, Lady in Waiting to Queen Marie Antoinette" in costume is photogravure #43 in the album presented to the Duchess of Devonshire and now in the National Portrait Gallery.[5] The printing on the portrait says, "Lady Farquhar as Duchess de Mailly, Lady in Waiting to Queen Marie Antoinette," with a Long S in Duchess.[6]

The Duchesse de Mailly who was in Marie Antoinette's court was Marie-Jeanne de Mailly (1747-1792), who was a court official between 1770 and 1781.[7]

Lady Emilie Farquhar was not mentioned in any press reports, but portraits of both Lord and Lady Farquhar were in the commemorative album of portraits.

Lord Horace Farquhar[edit | edit source]

Sir Horace Brand Farquhar was dressed as Count Egmont or a Burgher of Amsterdam. Lafayette's portrait (left) of "Horace Brand Farquhar, 1st Earl Farquhar as Count Egmont" in costume is photogravure #44 in the album presented to the Duchess of Devonshire and now in the National Portrait Gallery.[5] The printing on the portrait says, "Sir Horace Farquhar Bart. M.P. as Count Egmont."[8]

  • Sir Horace Farquhar was "a Dutch burgher after Rembrandt (one of the best costumes at the ball)."[9]:p. 5, Col. 7c
  • "Sir Horace Farquhar's dress as a Burgher of Amsterdam was copied from a Rembandt [sic] picture."[10]
  • "Sir Horace Farquhar [was] a Rembrandt, in brown cloth and velvet."[11]:42, Col. 2c
  • "Sir Horace Farquhar, jerkin of light brown cloth, appliqué with dark brown velvet, a band round the waist ornamented with gold; breeches same colour as jerkin; hose, silk café au lait; cloak of brown cloth, large and heavy, carried on right arm; Rembrandt ruff and cuffs; hat, large broad-brimmed beaver."[12]:p. 42, Col. 1b
  • Lord Horace Farquhar's original costume ("Dutch gentleman of the 17th century") appeared in the Drury Lane production of the White Heather.[13]

Count Egmont was probably Lamoral, Count of Egmont (1522–1568), a Netherlandic political and military leader, associated with William of Orange and King Philip II of Spain, who had him executed for heresy and treason.[14] Beethoven's 1810 Egmont Overture (and incidental music)[15] were composed for a revival of Geothe's 1788 play of the same name.[16]

An Earl of Egmont in the Peerage of Ireland existed at this time. Charles George Perceval, 7th Earl of Egmont died Sunday 5 September 1897, at 51, having sat in the House of Lords in the 1870s.[17] Lamoral, Count of Egmont has been regarded as heroic since his death and is almost certainly the figure Sir Horace Farquhar was thinking of.
