1897 July 2, Lady Archibald Campbell attended the Duchess of Devonshire's fancy-dress ball at Devonshire House, along with Elspeth Campbell, who accompanied Princess Louise and John Campbell, Marquis of Lorne. At the Duchess of Devonshire's fancy-dress ball, Lady Archibald Campbell — Lady Janey Campbell — dressed as Diana[3]:32, Col. 2a or Artemis.

  • "as 'Artemis,' goddess of the chase, wore a clinging peplum of very pale green crépe, hand embroidered in silver round the hem with the ancient Greek scroll. The outer scarf of gauze falling in multitudinous folds, reflected mysterious moonlight tints, partly green, partly blue. The quiver, made of ashwood, contained the silver-shafted arrows, and was slung over the right shoulder across the back by a leather band of the same shade. In the hand she carried a green bow unstrung, and sandals were worn to match, while on her head beamed the huntress goddess's own symbol, 'The Crescent Moon.'"[4]:5, Col. 7b
  • "Lady Archibald Campbell wore a beautiful dress as 'Artemis,' Goddess of the Chase. It was in palest green crêpe de chine, embroidered by hand with glittering silver thread and crystals, which resembled dew-drops. The tunic opened at the side to show an under-dress of pale steely-blue crêpe. Floating scarves of pale blue and green chiffon suggested moonlight. The sleeves of green chiffon were held together by crystals. The head-dress consisted of a star of crystal on the forehead, and a crescent moon in mother-o'-pearl lit by electric light."[5]:42, Col. 1b
  • "Lady Archibald Campbell, Artemis, Goddess of the Chase, appeared in tones of pale blue and green embroidery in silver, wearing a leopard skin, an electric star in her hair."[6]
