Name of this portal
[edit source]should this be "informal education"? --Remi 07:45, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Remi. I checked around the place quite a bit before naming it. I started out thinking like you. But in fact it's an educational term-of-art, and "non-formal education" is the correct term. Would you like some references? --McCormack 08:17, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
- Here's a perhaps useful link that explains more: http://www.infed.org/biblio/non_formal_paradigm.htm --McCormack 08:46, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
- Expanding on this a little more, as no doubt others will ask as well. The portal is designed to be a very high-level (major) portal on Wikiversity for everything that is outside the pre-school, primary, secondary, tertiary and research sectors. That means it comprises (for example) the various overlapping areas also known as lifelong learning, informal learning, adult education, extra-curricular learning, and a whole bunch more. Conceivably one could create minor portals branching off from this one, each dedicated to one of these areas. On the other hand, it might be a good idea to gather content first and then create sub-branches once we have more users and we know what the demographics of that population are. So much for the intentions. What about the name? Well, "informal" education could be understood as derogatory or as not comprising enough of this area. So far as I could work out for myself, the term "non-formal" is very conventional, widely accepted, comprehensive and harmless. If people have alternative suggestions, please list them with a brief justification and references. Don't forget that we can also use redirects - e.g. Portal:Informal Education could be created and then just redirected here. --McCormack 11:54, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
- "The portal is designed to be..." <-- an incredible job of "design" that does not even mention the half of Wikiversity which is devoted to learning projects. --JWSchmidt 04:50, 13 June 2008 (UTC)
Grouping the Votian courses under the (existing) “Votic” header
[edit source]Can the (many) Votian courses, which each appear individually in the Guide to Non-formal education list, be grouped under the (existing) header “Votic” Thanks! --Lbeaumont (talk) 21:49, 9 September 2012 (UTC)
