Advice on using these materials

[edit | edit source]
[edit | edit source]

If you have reached this page by browsing through Wikiversity, it has potentially been subject to editing. The only way to prevent this is to enter through a permalink that is provided by your instructor.

  • To verify that you are on a permalinked Wikiversity page, look at the top of the page for the words "Revision as of". Also, the http address ends with "&oldid=(series of numbers)".
  • To guarantee that these materials have never been edited, it is best to obtain the http address from a trusted source such as the OpenStax website or from your instructor.
  • Once you have clicked the link to a quiz, you will see links from that quiz. These links are not permalinks. Even the images on the quizzes are subject to change.
  • When in doubt about any of the images on a quiz you are studying, you should refer to the PDF files. The images on the PDF files are not linked to the current image on [Commons].

About the exams

[edit | edit source]
  • These exams are randomized selections from the questions on your study guide. Any questions on your exam not on these study guides were added by your instructor. Sample copies of these exams are available on Wikiversity at Quizbank/College_Physics.
  • Your instructor may wish to add questions not on this testbank.

For instructors

[edit | edit source]
  • You must be an instructor to obtain copies of the exams. They will be proved by OpenStax College.
  • The exams are somewhat short in order to allow instructors to add questions not on the study guide.
  • You might notice that these exams do not closely follow OpenStax College Physics. This exam bank was started in May 2014 for a calculus based course. In the future, a concerted effort will be made to make these questions more compatible with OpenStax College Physics.
  • You need to compensate for the fact that students know exactly what is on the test. A few tips:
  1. The exams are short in duration to permit you to add questions. A very easy way to do this is to demand that students explain how they solved one of the problems.[9]
  2. Students must not be allowed to write equation sheets. Effort to produce an equation sheet is underway at Category:Physics_equations/Sheet. Fortunately, I have never had a problem with programmable calculators because programming the calculators requires far too much effort to be worthwhile.

Footnotes

[edit | edit source]
  1. See How things work college course/Motion simple arithmetic
  2. Slightly outside the scope of openstax College Physics: 2Dmotion requires equations of motion for free fall must be generalized to uniform acceleration in an arbitrary direction
  3. Might be outside the scope of openstax College Physics The conceptual wikiquiz "Velocity and acceleration" covers concepts appropriate for students in openstax College Physics, and a Wikiversity resource covering this material would be easy to develop.
  4. Requires mastery of Geometrical proof of equation for uniform circular motionThis proof is given in openstax College Physics, but students will need to see the proof in the notation of the quiz. Also, How things work college course/Conceptual physics wikiquizzes/Uniform circular motion could be developed into a quiz on this topic.
  5. See How things work college course/Motion simple arithmetic
  6. The same quiz formatted differently is Electric_Circuit_Analysis/Circuit_Analysis_Quiz_1
  7. Does not entirely match openstax College Physics. Though not an exact match to openstax College Physics, the reading provided for this quiz is readable at this level.
  8. Does not entirely match openstax College Physics. Though not an exact match to openstax College Physics, the reading provided for this quiz is readable at this level.
  9. This is essential in the conceptual courses to prevent students from simply memorizing the answers. It doesn't take much to accomplish this on easy exams where high scores are the norm: One such question counting for 15% of the test will greatly impact the optimal preparation strategy. Convincing students that they need to adopt this strategy is not easy, however.
