Progress and Prospects in Parkinson's Research/Causes/Deficiencies/Glutathione
Glutathione (GSH) is an antioxidant, preventing damage to important cellular components caused by |reactive oxygen species such as free radicals and peroxides. All human cells have the capability of synthesising GSH but the principal source has been shown to be the liver.

Garrido et al  evaluated the effects of raising and lowering glutathione levels in rats. They found that in both cases the nigral neurons deteriorated and resulted in the development of Parkinsonian symptoms. They postulated that a glutathione imbalance might be a cause of the disease and its proper regulation might be considered as a viable therapy.
