Purpose of category[edit source]

I'm wondering what the purpose of this category is (and other user group categories), since users don't seem to be added automatically to it? The special page showing (searching) for bureaucrats shows four users, while the category shows only two of them, which I guess is because they have added the category to their user pages and the other two have not. /Patrik Näsfors (discusscontribs) 16:47, 12 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Users choose whether or not to include themselves in a category. There is an mw:Extension:UserFunctions extension that would allow a template to detect whether a user was in a group, but according to Special:Version, that extension is not loaded at Wikiversity. We can request that extensions be added, but it requires community approval (a discussion in the Colloquium). -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 17:08, 12 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
You know a lot :-) So far I have not got so deeply into the MediaWiki software, so I don't know if it would be a good option to include that extension for that reason. Another alternative would just be to delete this category, or is there a practical use for this category, when user groups (correctly) can be found with Special:ListUsers? I think something should be done at least, since this category is not complete (since users choose if they want to use it - and I think not everyone thinks about it). /Patrik Näsfors (discusscontribs) 19:52, 12 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome to start a Colloquium discussion with the community regarding the value of user categories, and whether WV:STAFF should be required to include appropriate categories on their user pages. The category shouldn't be removed without community support, and can't be required without that support. -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 21:08, 12 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
