Suggestion for linking topic with course content[edit source]

Hey U3211780, great topic. When I saw this chapter title, I thought it could also be interesting to consider how being employed may have positive or protective effects on mental health. Perhaps it could be linked to the lecture 4 content that highlighted the value of autonomy, mastery and purpose. Have fun with the chapter. Feedback and suggestions[edit source]

Hey! Thanks for picking such an important discussion.

I think what you have here is a really great start. You could benefit a lot by having topic questions to help guide you and provide structure to the chapter. An example could be:
  1. How does unemployment affect mental health?

This way you can explore the relationship of unemployment and dive more deeply into how it affects mental health and why (using theories). You could also tie it together in the end and provide suggestions on how to mitigate the risk of developing mental health issues due to unemployment i.e. legally binding job security, access to healthcare and psych care, what support systems should we put in place for those who have just lost a job?

thanks and goodluck!!Dana --Dnamynts (discusscontribs) 16:48, 8 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Heading casing[edit source]

FYI, the recommended Wikiversity heading style uses sentence casing. For example:

Self-determination theory rather than Self-Determination Theory

Here's an example chapter with correct heading casing: Growth mindset development

Topic development feedback[edit source]

The topic development submission has been reviewed according to the marking criteria. Written feedback is provided below, plus there is a general feedback page. Please also check the chapter's page history for editing changes made whilst reviewing this chapter plan. Responses to this feedback can be made by starting a new section below and/or contacting the reviewer. Topic development marks are available via UCLearn. Note that marks are based on what was available before the due date.

Title[edit source]

  1. The title is correctly worded and formatted
  2. The sub-title is correctly worded and formatted

Headings[edit source]

  1. See earlier comment about Heading casing
  2. I like the practical emphasis - i.e., using theory and research to suggest practical changes
  3. Adopt closer alignment between the sub-title, focus questions, and top-level headings
  4. Quiz doesn't need a separate heading; instead embed quiz questions within relevant sections

Overview[edit source]

  1. Move the scenario or case study into a feature box (with an image) to the start of this section to help catch reader interest
  2. Add an image to the case study to help attract reader interest
  3. A brief, evocative description of the problem/topic is provided
  4. Present focus questions in a feature box at the end of this section

Key points[edit source]

  1. Promising development of key points for each section, with some relevant citations
  2. Some claims lack sufficient citation
  3. Promising balance of theory and research. Ideally, synthesise and provide examples.
  4. It is unclear whether the best available psychological theory and research has been consulted in the preparation of this plan (e.g., are there any systematic reviews about this topic?)
  5. Conclusion (the most important section):
    1. Well developed
    2. What might the take-home, practical messages be? (What are the answer(s) to the question(s) in the sub-title and/or focus questions?)

Figure[edit source]

  1. A relevant figure is presented and captioned
  2. Figure(s) are cited at least once in the main text

Learning feature[edit source]

  1. Include in-text interwiki links for the first mention of key terms to relevant Wikipedia articles and/or to other relevant book chapters
  2. Promising use of example(s)/case study(ies)
  3. Consider including more examples/case studies, quiz question(s), table(s) etc.

References[edit source]

  1. Good
  2. For APA referencing style, check and correct:
    1. capitalisation
    2. italicisation

Resources[edit source]

  1. See also
    1. OK
    2. Use internal link style (see Tutorial 02)
  2. External links
    1. OK
    2. Rename links so that they are more user friendly (see Tutorial 02)
    3. Include source in brackets after link

User page[edit source]

  1. Created – minimal, but sufficient
  2. Description about self provided
  3. Consider linking to your eportfolio page and/or any other professional online profile or resume such as LinkedIn. This is not required, but it can be useful to interlink your professional networks.
  4. Link provided to book chapter is now broken because it was set up on another user page - I've moved it to Motivation and emotion/Book/2023/Unemployment and mental health

Social contribution[edit source]

  1. One type of contribution outside of own chapter
  2. Limited engagement
  3. Looking ahead to the book chapter submission, see how to earn marks for social contributions.

Multimedia presentation feedback

The accompanying multimedia presentation has been marked according to the marking criteria. Marks are available via the unit's UCLearn site. Written feedback is provided below, plus see the general feedback page. Responses to this feedback can be made by starting a new section below. If you would like further clarification about the marking or feedback, contact the unit convener.

Overall[edit source]

  1. Overall, this is a basic presentation
  2. The presentation is over the maximum time limit — content beyond 3 mins is ignored for marking and feedback purposes

Overview[edit source]

  1. An opening slide with the title and sub-title is displayed and narrated — this helps to clearly convey the purpose of the presentation
  2. Create an engaging introduction to hook audience interest
  3. A context for the presentation is established
  4. What country/countries is the unemployment statistic for?
  5. Consider asking focus questions that lead to take-away messages. This will help to focus and discipline the presentation.

Content[edit source]

  1. Comments about the book chapter may also apply to this section
  2. The presentation addresses the topic
  3. The audience is international, so internationalise the presentation. Australians are only .3% of world population.
  4. The presentation makes good use of relevant psychological theory
  5. How do the different types of unemployment relate to mental health?
  6. The presentation makes basic use of relevant psychological research
  7. Ideally, make more explicit use of research
  8. The presentation makes reasonably good use of citations to support claims
  9. The presentation could be improved by making more use of examples or case studies

Conclusion[edit source]

  1. The Conclusion did not fit within the time limit

Audio[edit source]

  1. The presentation makes basic use of narrated audio
  2. Audio communication is well/reasonably well paced
  3. Reasonably good intonation
  4. The narration is reasonably well practiced and/or performed
  5. Audio recording quality was poor (e.g., different volume levels, some static, keyboard clicks)
  6. Review microphone set-up to achieve higher recording quality. Probably an on-board microphone was used (e.g., keyboard and/or mouse clicks were audible). Consider using an external microphone.
  7. The narrated content is reasonably well matched to the target topic

Video[edit source]

  1. Overall, visual display quality is basic
  2. The presentation makes basic use of text and image based slides
  3. The font size is mostly sufficiently large to make it easy to read
  4. Some of the font size could be larger to make it easier to read
  5. The amount of text presented per slide could be reduced to make it easier to read and listen at the same time
  6. Consider increasing the contrast between font colour and background colour to make text easier to read
  7. The visual communication is supplemented in a basic way by images
  8. Also consider using diagrams
  9. The presentation is basically produced using simple tools
  10. The visual content is reasonably well matched to the target topic

Meta-data[edit source]

  1. The chapter sub-title but not the chapter title is used in the name of the presentation. The title would help to clearly convey the purpose of the presentation.

Please also check the chapter's page history to check for editing changes made whilst reviewing through the chapter. Chapter marks will be available via UCLearn along with social contribution marks and feedback. Keep an eye on Announcements.

Overall[edit source]

  1. Overall, this is a good chapter. It makes good use of psychological theory and research to address a real-world phenomenon or problem.
  2. This chapter could be improved by improving the writing style and taking account of earlier feedback
  3. Very good use of academic, peer-reviewed citations to support claims
  4. For additional feedback, see the following comments and these copyedits

Overview[edit source]

  1. Underdeveloped
  2. Engage reader interest via a more readable/interesting case study or scenario in a feature box with a relevant image
  3. Explains the problem or phenomenon
  4. Provide focus questions in a feature box to help guide the reader and structure the chapter

Theory[edit source]

  1. A very good range of relevant theories are selected, described, and explained
  2. Build more strongly on related chapters and/or Wikipedia articles (e.g., by embedding links to other chapters)
  3. Good/ depth is provided about relevant theory(ies)
  4. Use tables, figures, and/or lists are to help convey key theoretical information
  5. Consider using more examples to illustrate theoretical concepts

Research[edit source]

  1. Very good review of relevant research
  2. Basic critical thinking about relevant research is evident
  3. Critical thinking about research could be further evidenced by:
    1. describing the methodology (e.g., sample, measures) in important studies
    2. discussing the direction of relationships
    3. considering the strength of relationships
    4. acknowledging limitations
    5. pointing out critiques/counterarguments
    6. suggesting specific directions for future research

Integration[edit source]

  1. Good integration between theory and research

Conclusion[edit source]

  1. Very good summary and conclusion
  2. Key points are well summarised
  3. Summarise key points
  4. Address the focus questions
  5. Add practical, take-home message(s)

Style[edit source]

  1. Written expression
    1. Overall, the quality of written expression is basic
    2. The target audience is international, not domestic. Australians represent only 0.3% of the world human population. I've removed the Australian-specific mental health services.
    3. Some paragraphs are overly long. Communicate one key idea per paragraph in three to five sentences.
    4. Avoid one sentence paragraphs. Convey one idea per paragraph using three to five sentences.
  2. Layout
    1. Include an introductory paragraph before branching into the sub-sections (see [Provide more detail] tags)
    2. Avoid having sections with 1 sub-heading – use 0 or 2+ sub-headings
    3. See earlier comments about heading casing
  3. Grammar
    1. The grammar for many sentences could be improved (e.g., see the [grammar?] tags)
      1. Consider using a grammar checking tool
      2. Another option is to share draft work with peers and ask for their assistance
    2. Abbreviations
      1. Spell out abbreviations on their first use, to explain them to the reader
  4. Proofreading
    1. More proofreading is needed (e.g., fix punctuation and typographical errors) to bring the quality of written expression closer to a professional standard. For example, a space is needed after a period and before the start of the next sentence.
    2. Remove unnecessary capitalisation
  5. APA style
    1. Express numbers < 10 using words (e.g., two) and >= 10 and over using numerals (e.g., 99)
    2. Figures
      1. Most of the figures have been removed because of copyright violation
    3. Citations are not in full APA style (7th ed.). For example:
      1. Learn when to use parentheses and when not to use parentheses e.g., "Similarly, (Iversen & Sabroe, 1988)" should be "Similarly, Iversen and Sabroe (1988)"
      2. Use ampersand (&) inside parentheses and "and" outside parentheses
      3. If there are three or more authors, cite the first author followed by et al., then year. For example, either:
        1. in-text, Smith et al. (2020), or
        2. in parentheses (Smith et al., 2020)
    4. References use very good APA style:
      1. Separate page numbers using an en-dash (–) rather than an em-dash (—)

Learning features[edit source]

  1. Insufficient use of learning features
  2. No use of embedded in-text interwiki links to Wikipedia articles. Adding interwiki links for the first mention of key words and technical concepts would make the text more interactive. See example.
  3. No use of embedded in-text links to related book chapters. Embedding in-text links to related book chapters helps to integrate this chapter into the broader book project.
  4. Minimal use of image(s)
  5. No use of table(s)
  6. No use of feature box(es)
  7. Basic use of case studies or examples
  8. Basic use of quiz(zes) and/or reflection question(s)
  9. The quiz questions could be improved by being more focused on the key points and/or take-home messages
  10. The quiz questions could be more effective as learning prompts by being embedded as single questions within each corresponding section rather than as a set of questions at the end
  11. Basic use of interwiki links in the "See also" section
    1. Rename links and use internal linking style per Tutorial 02
    2. Use alphabetical order
    3. Include sources in parentheses
    4. Move external links to the external links section
  12. Basic use of external links in the "External links" section
    1. Rename links per Tutorial 02
    2. Select links for an international audience
    3. Use alphabetical order
    4. Include sources in parentheses

Social contribution[edit source]

  1. No user page
  2. No logged social contributions
