    • Trace the path of blood in the pulmonary and systemic circuits.
    • Relate the occurrence of atherosclerosis and a thrombus to a heart attack and stroke.
  • Sub Objectives- The objectives will require that students be able to:
    • Have a basic knowledge of the anatomy of the circulatory system in humans.
    • Have a basic knowledge of the physiology of the circulatory system in humans.

OBJECTIVE

By the next class period, students will be able to:

  • Describe the anatomy of the heart including its attached blood vessel.
  • Trace the path of blood in the pulmonary and systemic circuits.
  • Relate the occurrence of atherosclerosis and a thrombus to a heart attack and stroke.


The objectives will require that students be able to:

  • Know the anatomy & physiology of the cardiovascular system.
  • Become familiar with the major cardiovascular diseases and disorders.


THE CHALLENGE

Your father has the following symptoms:

  • tiredness,
  • snoozing often during the day,
  • discomfort in the center of to the left of the chest (sometimes described as irritation),
  • daily heartburn or indigestion,
  • tightening of the area around the jaws,
  • discomfort when exercising,
  • sharp pain in the head during cold weather,
  • lack of concentration,
  • poor sleep pattern,
  • general irritability,
  • forgetfulness and/or mood swings,
  • lack of interest in day to day family life,
  • an inability to sexually perform,
  • no enthusiasm for new things
  • reluctant to accepting any changes in any area of living
  • a thrombus in a coronary vessel.

What is the most likely disease that your father might have?

GENERATE IDEAS

The students will work in groups to figure out what can be going wrong with the father. The students will list the possible diseases and disorders. The group will then decide which the most likely disease the father has is based on the symptoms.

TEST YOUR METTLE

Blackboard quizzes as chapter is delivered. Students do work in the lab to learn through hands-on activities (dissection). Instructors ask questions to check for understanding. Post-test.


GO PUBLIC

Students demonstrate to the instructor using illustrations of the pathway of blood. Students turn in the list they compiled, including possible solutions to the challenge.
