Competitive Economic Advantage[edit source]
Did anyone else think it was strange that a justification for basic math and reading skills was based on achieving a 'competitive economic advantage?' Shouldn't the value of those skills be inherent in the incalculable personal benefits of education? Like the value of reading, simply for leisure, or using math to play riddles. Those are benefits that simply cannot be quantified and shouldn't in my opinion as the human experience is as vast as it is deep and perhaps common standards for learning should be based alone on a principle like that.
