Qualifications & experience

I have been active on the Wikis for 2 years and 2 months, starting my journey with the not-for-profit “Helping Give Away Psychological Science” (HGAPS) and am part of their User Group. This organization is dedicated to information dissemination, with Wikiversity being a primary platform for these goals. It is from special projects in HGAPS that I have gained excellent technical experience on Wiki as well as great familiarity editing Wiki pages. I have intermediate understanding of transclusion and templates, and an excellent set of skills for Wiki formatting and Wiki text editing. A special project to note would be the emergency banner system I implemented for HGAPS’ Wiki pages. This project highlights my ability to understand complex Wiki code and apply them in a stylistic, useful, and impactful way. Current personal projects include importing templates into Wikiversity from Wikipedia as to increase functionality for users on the Wikiversity project. An example of a template I have successfully imported from Wikipedia is found here, and it allows users to document the source page they pulled a transcluded section from. I still have much to learn about Wiki, and I look forward to exploring these possibilities as a potential technical editor!

I graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, and I currently work as a therapist for children with ASD. It is through this experience, as well as my time with HGAPS, that I have developed insight into the value and power that open source platforms can have. I took statistics courses and coding courses during my time here, and have a good understanding of object-oriented programming.

Jenna Harmon (Jeharmon7)

Qualifications & experience

I have been active on the Wikis since September 2020 (3 months), when I became a member of the volunteer organization Helping Give Away Psychological Science (HGAPS). In HGAPS, we are dedicated to dissemination science through making the "best of the free" in psychological research science widely available to clinicians, researchers, professors, and the general public alike. We tailor our presentation of this information to the targeted audience for most efficient understanding. For example, we explain psychological terms, diagnostic labels, resulting study data, etc. in layman's terms on Wikipedia for the general public but present data and research in more detail for those who already understand such information like clinicians, researchers, etc. on Wikiversity. During my time as an HGAPS member, I have gained experience in editing and transclusion for Wiki pages such as the ADHD page. Recently, I have started learning more about creating and formatting wiki pages. I still have much to discover about the Wikis but I am a fast learner and hard-worker. I am excited about the possibilities involved in being a technical editor.

I received my B.A. in Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC). While at UNC, I gained experience working in two different research labs as well as completed courses in statistics and research psychology. This experience, in addition to working as a wiki editor for HGAPS, provide a valuable background for the technical editor position.

Logan Smith Logan520

Qualifications & experience

I started editing Wikipedia just over 4 years ago as part of Eric Youngstrom's research lab and Helping Give Away Psychological Science (HGAPS), which is now a recognized user group. I was the inaugural treasurer of the HGAPS student club at UNC-Chapel Hill and handled the paperwork to have HGAPS recognized as a corporation in North Carolina and a nonprofit in the United States (along with help from another student). Throughout my time in this position, and in subsequent roles as a mentor to new chapters, I have taught others how to use Wiki. All this to say, I have considerable experience making edits, though I have much still to learn about the platform and how Wikimedia projects connect with one another.

I have some degree of experience with academic journals (including one paper that I am a coauthor on in the WikiJournal of Medicine), and I have a strong educational background to draw upon. I graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2018 with a bachelor's degree in psychology and history. I am currently enrolled in a doctoral program in clinical psychology and plan to pursue a career in academia after graduating.

Wilson Jacobs (WillyTheVolleyball)

Qualifications & experience

For 2.5 years, I was an Executive Assistant, then Executive Coordinator, at one of the most popular kid-centric channels on YouTube. Within these roles, I handled similar administrative duties as described under the ‘Newly submitted articles’ and ‘New editorial applications’ sections of the technical editor role summary, such as spearheading the on boarding process for newly hired assistants, and creating databases to track the performance of the channels’ videos. I left my job at the channel in June 2020 in order to apply my professional experience towards developing engaging educational and psychological treatment tools on open access platforms like YouTube and Wikipedia.

I have volunteered at the non-profit, Helping Give Away Psychological Science (HGAPS) for the past several months. In that time, I have re-vamped the organizations’ digital video presence through editing and uploading every video. Since HGAPS’ YouTube channel re-launch less than two months ago, we have accumulated over 143 subscribers. I have added various HGAPS videos to Wikiversity, which explain technical skills within Wiki platforms, such as conducting a Wikidata Query. Simultaneously, I have supplemented my own working familiarity with the Wiki platforms by completing all of the Professional, and Wikidata Professional Development Modules on Wiki Education, and applied what I learned from the modules by editing several Wikidata statement entries myself. In addition to HGAPS, I currently volunteer for two academic psychology labs. Due to my extensive professional experience on open access platforms, and a diligence to learn and contribute more, I believe I can be an asset as a technical editor. Also in regards to my educational background, I earned a degree in Communication Studies with a concentration in Media and Technology Studies and Production from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2016.

Emma Choplin (Emmagch)

Qualifications & experience

I started editing Wikipedia over 4 years ago as part Helping Give Away Psychological Science (HGAPS), a recognized user group. I was the president-elect, president, and past-president of the HGAPS student club at UNC-Chapel Hill and an active alumni member where I often teach members more complex wiki code and tricks to increase the user experience for the Wiki audiences as well as increasing exposure to related wiki content. I have also educated my team on uploading images to Wikimedia and how to claim authorship of it properly which has increased images that stick. I also enjoy helping Wikimedia by reviewing images and tagging what is in the image and categorizing them for those who uploaded without filling out a lot of helpful information. I assist a lot of HGSPS wiki users on how to optimize their wiki user page with information like user boxes and links so that the community can learn more about them. I was a critical member for Dr. Eric Youngstrom in helping him understand the WikiJournal review process and making sure to implement the feedback left by reviewers including technical reviewers so I am familiar with what to keep an eye out for. My HTML coding along with R Studio coding also makes me a good editor for Wikidata. I am currently a Research Associate in the Social and Cultural Neuroscience Lab at University of Miami in the Psychology department. This means that I have academic writing experience beyond clinical psychology but for affective science, cognitive and behavioral neuroscience, pain medicine, racial and gender bias research, doctor-patient relationships, and physiological data. I have a diverse wealth of experience making edits, on Wikiversity, Wikimedia, and Wikipedia but still need to deepen my base for Wikidata but I am a dedicated learner. I graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in 201 with a B.S. in Psychology and a double-minor in Neuroscience and Religious Studies. I am currently waiting to hear back from six graduate programs from a Ph.D in Clinical Psychology. Qualifications & experience

I am a Ph.D. student in the Clinical Psychology program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, having previously received a double BA in Cognitive Science and Philosophy from the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. As part of my research program and graduate training, I have extensive experience with academic writing and publishing scientific articles in professional journals. This includes experience researching, organizing, drafting, and editing academic work at a commercial publication standard. I also have technical expertise in the Wikimedia source language as well as coding more broadly. I have built my own Wiki for use in my lab group, and I also have experience creating data visualizations in R and Python (e.g., an interactive tool for assessing clinical significant change in psychotherapy patients). In the area of open science, I have used the OSF platform extensively to archive my own work, and also as a tool to supplement resources on Wikiversity by providing a "version of record" for documents. In my role as a mentor and team leader in the non-profit Helping Give Away Psychological Science (HGAPS), I have contributed to resources on Wikiversity on topics such as mental health care during the COVID-19 pandemic, responding to incidences of community violence, and the prevalence of bipolar disorder around the world. I have been active on Wikipedia/Wikiversity/Wikidata since 2018.

There seemed to be consensus at the meeting last week in favour of multiple tech eds and the applicants have some complementary skills (some more experienced on wiki, and others editorially and organisationally). Given the consensus here, I think it's reasonable to implement the consensus and onboard the group. Per the meeting at the end of last year: I'll give them the introductory information on processes, Alaa will ensure they're up to speed on wikidata, and Mikael will give them the necessary info on Crossref, and domains / webhosting. Employment agreement

WikiJournal employs the Employee in the capacity of Technical editor, which duties shall include those set out in the Responsibilities section below, and any other such duties as may be required by Employee from time to time upon the following terms and conditions:

Tasks
  • Editing submitted articles to WikiJournal:
    • Copyediting articles (including image formatting, reference formatting, and checking image attributions)
    • Managing journal metadata (including articles, authors, reviewers, and editors)
    • Preparing and uploading the pdf version of articles
    • Generating DOI codes (Digital Object Identifiers) for accepted articles
  • Assisting in arranging peer reviews of articles submitted to WikiJournal, by regularly checking the potential upcoming articles, and offer assistance to peer review coordinators at least in articles with delayed progression. Such assistance may be in organizing lists of names, credentials and emails of potential peer reviewers.
  • Keeping a record of tasks performed and how much time was used for each task, to be presented monthly to the administrative board of WikiJournal.
Compensation

In consideration for Employee's service, WikiJournal shall pay the Employee $20 per hour, payed within a reasonable time upon receiving the monthly report from the Employee.

Duration of contract

The contract shall commence on January 10, 2021 and shall continue in effect until the total compensation across the technical editor team has reached $1400.

Confidentiality

The Employee must keep the confidentiality of works, author or peer reviewer identities, or other privileged information unless permission has been granted to disclose such material or information. The Employee must not retain such works for personal use.

Scientific misconduct

The Employee should act in accordance with the policies of WikiJournal, as described in the Bylaws and Ethics statement of WikiJournal. In case the Employee suspects scientific misconduct or undisclosed conflicts of interest, the Employee should inform the editor-in-chief or an editorial board member of the affected journal.

Technical editor application of Treens Shafee Alcorn

Qualifications & experience

I am primarily interested in the Wikidata aspects of the technical editor role. I have varied experience in relevant kinds of data entry and collation and am experienced in a range of other digital and physical formats (Excel, MYOB, and MELU Herbarium, multiple proprietary formats) and for different end goals (academic, commercial, archival). As demonstrated in my research work, I am skilled at organising and formatting large data sets for machine readability and human comprehensibility, and at data visualisation and graphics manipulation. I have experience with Visual Basic, HTML, and some familiarity with Javascript so am comfortable with the light coding aspects of wikidata and markup. I am also skilled in document formatting, having worked extensively with the Microsoft Office suite throughout my PhD.

I have published papers both as first author and middle author during my PhD (ORCID) and am familiar with the academic publishing process. I also have a particular interest in science outreach and extensive experience in science communication, in-person and on the radio, but also in writing, via data-graphics, and artistically. I've done quite a bit of interdisciplinary research and a lot of my outreach activities were also done with a multidisciplinary team (eg Royal Society Science Exhibition, collaboration between Plant Science and Physics), making me comfortable and familiar with translating across fields and departments.

I am good at breaking down large or complex tasks into manageable pieces & implementing an efficient and methodical workflow plan to ensure I consistently meet deadlines. I work well and efficiently independently, have excellent attention to detail and am good at seeking help when required. Having benefitted so much from working with shared gathered genetics data, and been privileged enough to have access to world-class university libraries, I strongly believe that data, information and knowledge should be free and accessible (my PhD thesis is shared with a CCBY4 license here) and I would be excited to work as a technical editor of the WikiJournals project.
