Talk:Gene transcriptions/Promoters

Does a gene have only one promoter? What if the gene has alternate transcripts? I see from gene annotations at the UCSC genome browser that there can be multiple different transcription start sites listed for a single gene. Does a different transcription start site require a different promoter?
