Costume at the Duchess of Devonshire's 2 July 1897 Fancy-dress Ball[edit | edit source]

At the Duchess of Devonshire's fancy-dress ball, Mr. Biddulph (at 268), probably Algernon Myddleton Biddulph, was dressed as Count Soltykoff in the Court in the procession of Empress Catherine II of Russia.[4]:7, Col. 5b [5]

John Thomson's portrait of "A. M. Biddulph" in costume is photogravure #280 in the album presented to the Duchess of Devonshire and now in the National Portrait Gallery.[6] The printing on the portrait says, "A. M. Biddulph."[7]

Catherine II of Russia reigned from 1762 to 1796, and several men were called Count Saltykov during this time. In his portrait, Myddleton-Biddulph is wearing a breast plate and gauntlet-style gloves, suggesting a military leader. Count Ivan Petrovich Saltykov (28 June 1730 – 14 November 1805)[8] was a highly decorated general married to Countess Darya Petrovna Saltykova (20 September 1739 – December 23, 1802), who was a Lady in Waiting in the court of Catherine the Great and a leader of the social world in Moscow.[9] Lady Margaret Spicer was dressed as Countess Darya Petrovna Saltykova, probably, although the reports on her costume do not spell the name right, either.

Questions and Notes[edit | edit source]

  1. A. M. Biddulph is possibly Algernon Hugh Myddleton Biddulph, as the Myddleton came and went in this family. In this case, possibly it was treated as a middle name. At this time, no other likely candidates exist among any Biddulphs.
  2. Victor Biddulph does not seem to have attended the Duchess of Devonshire's 2 July 1897 fancy-dress ball, but he attended a number of other social events and is listed along with other Biddulphs; the list is on the Biddulph page.
  3. The Hon. Lady Biddulph is a Myddleton-Biddulph.
