Timeline[edit | edit source]

1884 February 25, Joseph Harry Lukach and Eugenie Bertha Caroline Zamarski married.

1893 May 11, Joseph Lukach applied for a passport to England; he was living in New York at the time, having been born in Detroit, Michigan (copy of passport application in Ancestry.com).

1897 July 2, Friday, Joseph Harry Lukach attended the Duchess of Devonshire's fancy-dress ball at Devonshire House.

1897 July 3, Saturday, Joseph Harry Lukach wrote this letter to Jennie (his wife?):

Portland Club, 9, St. James’ Square, S.W. Saturday 3/7/1897 My darling Jennie, I am writing under the impression of the Ball at Devonshire House which was the most overwhelmingly beautiful picture and display I have ever seen – and I am sure this century has never witnessed a display of so much good taste, beauty and wealth. As for jewellery I did not know there was so much in the world. It is described as a historical event of this century but the newspapers will give you a more graphic description than I am capable of. Besides Mr Cassel, Mr Beit and Mr Maguire I was, I think the only purely city man. It was quite a different thing to the reception and I deplore your absence for this I am sure you would have enjoyed and I should have given much to have had you present. While I was in the little tent watching people have their photos taken by Electric light (I could not get a turn) Prince George when photographed, shouted to the Princess of Wales, who was standing at the entrance of the tent “Come along Mother have your photograph taken, it’s done while you wait”. The grounds were laid out most tastefully, and the supper tent draped with beautiful tapestry. Enclosed you will find a delighted description by Harry of the Military Review at Aldershot. I am going out on Tuesday to the concert in which he takes part. I left Devonshire House at 4 am, at 9 am I was at Waterloo Station to see the Hamilton-Smiths off who left this morning for America, where they settle down for good. They all send you loving messages. At 10 am I had to join a deputation of the Australian Chamber of Mines (of which I am on the committee) to meet the Colonial Premiers, I being one of the speakers. At 11 I was back at the office and at 11.45 again at Waterloo Station to bid George Rosenthal farewell as he left for Africa. Now 12.30 I am writing you and at 1.30 I lunch at Belsize Court with the Berglieux after which I shall go to the office to get through some urgent work. I learnt that Harry’s holidays only begin the latter part of this month. I don’t quite like the idea of parting with him for longer than a fortnight. My idea is to send him to Grandpapa for a fortnight (say a few days after our arrival). We spend 2 or 3 weeks in some nice cool place in Switzerland (where we might meet the Herm Mantles) and wind up with a week or 10 days at Ostend. I can quite imagine how sweet Baby looks with the round curls. Does she say any witty or amusing things? Does she speak of me and Harry at times? How is nurse and how do you get on with her? I am happy that poor Cornel is recovering I had the enclosed letter from Josie. I must leave off, as I must get out to Belsize. Thousand loving kisses to you both.Joe[4]

1900 February 13, Lukach attended an entertainment at Her Majesty's Theatre to raise aid for widows and orphans of Her Majesty's Household Troops; the Prince of Wales was there; Muriel Wilson was a central performer. (Attendees listed in 1900.)

1918 April 21, Harry Charles Lukach and Joyce Evelyn Fremlin married.[1]

1919 May 1, Joseph Harry Lukach had changed his name to Joseph Harry Luke and notified the St. James's Club of this in writing or wrote it on St. James's Club stationery.[1]

1925 September 22, it looks like the College of Arms, the Garter King of Arms, created Armorial Bearings, or a crest for the family.[1]

Costume at the Duchess of Devonshire's 2 July 1897 Fancy-dress Ball[edit | edit source]

Old portrait of a man with a lacy collar, mustache and pointed beard
Henri, Duke of Rohan

Joseph Harry Lukach (at 685) attended the Duchess of Devonshire's fancy-dress ball. Lafayette's portrait of "Joseph Harry Lukach as Henri de Rohan" in costume is photogravure #232 in the album presented to the Duchess of Devonshire and now in the National Portrait Gallery.[5] The printing on the portrait says, "Mr J. H. Lukach as Henri de Rohan."[6]

Joseph Harry Lukach was not mentioned in any press reports, but his portrait is in the commemorative album of portraits.

Henri, Duke of Rohan (21 August 1579 – 13 April 1638) was leader of the Huguenots.[7] Favored by King Louis XIII, he spent much of his life in the military; he is known for his memoirs and other writings. The lettering at the top of the portrait of the Duke of Rohan (left) says, "Henry Dvc [sic] de Rohan."[8] The painting is of the French School, 17th century, and is in the collection at the Château de Beauregard, France.
