At the Duchess of Devonshire's fancy-dress ball, Captain George Holford was dressed as Philip IV. of Spain.[7]:5, Col. 7c

A caricature portrait (right) captioned "An Equerry" (Capt. George Holford) by Leslie Ward ("Spy") appeared in the 16 November 1899 issue of Vanity Fair, as Number 765 in its "Men of the Day" series,[10] giving a sense of what Holford looked like in the late 1890s.
