Costume at the Duchess of Devonshire's 2 July 1897 Fancy-dress Ball
[edit | edit source]Hon. Sir Seymour John Fortescue (at 296) attended the Duchess of Devonshire's fancy-dress ball. He was dressed as an Avocato[7] or Avocata[8] in the Venetians procession. The Gentlewoman says Mr. Seymour Fortescue was dressed after a picture by Moroni.[9]:p. 34, Col. 1b
Sir Seymour Fortescue's wife Emily Ormsby-Gore Fortescue is not mentioned. Was she at the ball?
A portrait by an unknown photographer of "Sir Seymour John Fortescue as a Venetian Lawyer, after the picture by Moroni in the National Gallery" in costume is photogravure #185 in the album presented to the Duchess of Devonshire and now in the National Portrait Gallery.[10] The printing on the portrait says, "The Hon. Seymour Fortescue as a Venetian Lawyer, after the picture by Moroni in the National Gallery."[11] This is not a photograph of Seymour Fortescue in costume: it appears to be a drawing.
Giovanni Battista Moroni's c. 1570 Portrait of a Man Holding a Letter (L'Avvocato) was acquired by the National Gallery in 1865.[12]
