Acquaintances, Friends and Enemies[edit | edit source]

Timeline[edit | edit source]

1838 September 10, William Wentworth-FitzWilliam and Lady Frances Douglas married.[7]

1867 August 10, William FitzWilliam, Viscount Milton and Laura Maria Theresa Beauclerk married.[8]

1893 February 2, Hon. Reginald Wentworth Fitzwilliam and Edith Isabella Georgina Lane-Fox married.[9]

1896 June 24, Billy (William Charles de Meuron) Wentworth-Fitzwilliam and Lady Maud Frederica Elizabeth Dundas married.[10]

1897 July 2, Friday, The Hon. Mr. and Mrs. Reginald Fitzwilliam attended the Duchess of Devonshire's Duchess of Devonshire's fancy-dress ball at Devonshire House, as did Lord and Lady Milton.

Mrs. Edith Fitzwilliam[edit | edit source]

At the Duchess of Devonshire’s 1897 Duchess of Devonshire's fancy-dress ball, Edith Isabella Georgina Wentworth Fitzwilliam, The Hon. Mrs. Reginald Fitzwilliam (at 635), appeared in a costume based on a painting by the 18th-century painter George Romney.

Lafayette's portrait of "Edith Isabella Georgina Fitzwilliam (née Lane-Fox) after a picture by Romney" in costume is photogravure #39 in the album presented to the Duchess of Devonshire and now in the National Portrait Gallery.[11] The printing on the portrait says, "The Hon. Mrs. Reginald Fitzwilliam after a picture by Romney."[12]

Edith Fitzwilliam is not mentioned in any newspaper report, but because the scenery here is the same as that used by so many others in their Lafayette, Ltd., photographs, this portrait probably shows that she attended the ball.

The Hon. Reginald Fitzwilliam[edit | edit source]

The Reginald (William Reginald) Wentworth FitzWilliam (at 636) was dressed as Nelson, as the Westminster Gazette says, "a very realistic Nelson; eye and arm wanting, as in the original."[13]:p. 5, Col. 1

Lafayette's portrait of The Hon. (William) Reginald Fitzwilliam as Nelson in costume is photogravure #40 in the album presented to the Duchess of Devonshire and now in the National Portrait Gallery.[11] The printing on the portrait says, "The Hon. R. Fitzwilliam as Nelson."[14]

Matthew Shepperson's portrait (right) of Horatio Nelson (1758–1805)[15] is one of 11 copies of a portrait by John Hoppner, which was probably painted between 8 November 1800 and 1 January 1801.[16] Shepperson's was probably painted around 1823–1824.[16] These paintings have been in the royal collection since then.

This painting shows Nelson wearing the star and ribbon of the order of the Bath and the St Vincent and Nile medals, with his empty right sleeve pinned to his coat. His right eye seems to be normal in this painting.

The Hon. Reginald Fitzwilliam was 35 years old at the time of the ball, and Admiral Nelson was about 40 at the time of Hoppner's portrait.

Lord and Lady Milton[edit | edit source]

Lord Billy Wentworth-Fitzwilliam, Viscount Milton (at 500) and Lady Maud Fitzwilliam, Viscountess Milton (at 501) were also present.[17]

Lafayette's portrait of "Maud Frederica Elizabeth (née Dundas), Countess Fitzwilliam when Viscountess Milton as Madame Le Brun" in costume is photogravure #72 in the album presented to the Duchess of Devonshire and now in the National Portrait Gallery.[11] The printing on the portrait says, "Viscountess Milton as Madame Le Brun," with a Long S in Viscountess.[18]

Madame Le Brun was probably Élisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun (16 April 1755 – 30 March 1842), late 18th-century portrait painter, including portraitist for Marie Antoinette.[19] The self-portrait (on the left), from 1786, is of a 31-year-old woman; Viscountess Milton was 30 years old at the time of the ball, when the photograph of her in her costume was taken.
