At the Duchess of Devonshire's fancy-dress ball, Donald Mackenzie Wallace (at 114) dressed as a

Henry Van der Weyde's portrait of "Sir Donald Mackenzie Wallace as Algernon Sidney" in costume is photogravure #259 in the album presented to the Duchess of Devonshire and now in the National Portrait Gallery.[3] The printing on the portrait says, "Sir Donald Mackenzie Wallace as Algernon Sidney."[4]

Algernon Sidney (1623-1683) was an anti-monarchist at the time of Charles I and Charles II, who had him executed for treason.[5] His analyses of government and corruption continue to be very influential.
