Amy Robsart and Edmund Tressilian

[edit | edit source]

Amy Robsart and Edmund Tressilian are characters in Sir Walter Scott's 1821 Kenilworth.[9] A Romance. Politically ambitious Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester attempts to keep his marriage to Amy Robsart secret. Edmund Tressilian loved Amy Robsart before she married Leicester, and because of Tressilian, Queen Elizabeth discovers the secret marriage. Leicester's steward Varney murders Amy, although a jury determines that she fell down stairs, breaking her neck.

The novel, like so much of Scott's work, was popular and influential. Arthur Sullivan wrote the music for the oratorio Kenilworth, A Masque of the Days of Queen Elizabeth with librettist Henry Fothergill Chorley and conducted its premiere at the Birmingham Festival on 8 September 1864; it was reviewed in the Times, not completely positively.[10] It was performed at the Crystal Palace on 12 November 1864 and in Dublin in 1868.[10]

Notes and Questions

[edit | edit source]
  1. It is an assumption that Claude George Cole-Hamilton is the Mr. Hamilton referred to by the Queen; check the Gentlewoman to see if there's enough context to know for certain.
  2. In the 1911 Wales Census, Claude George Cole-Hamilton and Lucy Charlewood Cole-Hamilton were living with their 3 daughters: Isabel Katherine Cole-Hamilton, Lucy Alice Cole-Hamilton, and Norah Elizabeth Cole-Hamilton, as well as 4 servants, Helene Heldt (German Governess, 36 years old), Mily Heldt is (English Cook, 30 years old), Annie Heldt (English servant, 26 years old), and Ada Price (English servants, 20 years old).[15]
  3. Claud George Cole-Hamilton's estate was worth £20,118 19s. 9d.[22] He left it to his solicitor and "spinster" daughter .
  4. It seems like it was the same Claud George Cole Hamilton in Argentina because of the daughter, Isabel Katherine Cole-Hamilton.
