1884, after his father died in 1884, Arthur Saunders Gore became Earl of Arran, but later in 1884 he was created Baron Sudley, in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, which gave him a seat in the House of Lords in London.

1889 July 29, Arthur Saunders Gore and Winifred Ellen Reilly Stopford married at the Royal Chapel, Cumberland Lodge, Windsor Park, Berkshire.

At the Duchess of Devonshire's fancy-dress ball, Lady Esther Gore Smith "wore a blue satin 'Henrietta Marie' dress."

By Henrietta Marie, Lady Smith may have meant Henrietta Maria de Bourbon (1609–1669), who was married to Charles I of England. Anthony van Dyck's 1633 Henrietta Maria and the Dwarf, Sir Jeffrey Hudson (right) was in the collection of the Earls of Northbrook at least between 1881 and 1904 and is now in the National Gallery. It shows the queen in a blue satin gown.

Arthur, Earl of Arran was dressed as Cardinal Loraine in the Queen Elizabeth procession. "Notable" was "Lord Arran as a cardinal." As a Cardinal, he was wearing "scarlet cloth robe, trimmed with lace; scarlet cape, biretta, &c."

By Cardinal Loraine, the Earl may have meant Charles, Cardinal of Lorraine (1524–1574). El Greco's c. 1572 Portrait of Charles de Guise, cardinal of Lorraine, archbishop of Reims (left) is now in the Kunsthaus Zürich.
