Introduction[edit | edit source]

Serbo-Croatian is the most widely spoken South Slavic language and the main language of Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, and Montenegro. These countries all have their own standard forms of the language. Although there are some differences between the standard forms, all are based on a specific subdialect (which is called Neo-Shtokavian) of its main dialect (which is called Shtokavian) and the differences between them are comparable to those between American and British English: The grammars are identical and words are only occasionally different. Despite this, this issue is rather sensitive to many speakers, who maintain that they speak different languages, even though they can easily understand one another.
