Welcome to the Goals for Paramedicine

This resource lays out the Goals of Paramedicine

1. Explicit Learning Goals For each program, class and lesson learning goals should be documented. These goals should not only be met, but also not deviated from during delivery. If the program, class or lesson digresses, perhaps another resource should be made to address the topics being covered outside of the learning goals.

2. As Simple as Possible
Nothing should be unnecessarily complex. If something reads as difficult, either simplify it, or take the time to explain it clearly in plain terms.

3. Create a Pathway of Learning
User should feel they are being guided in the direction that they want to go, and that they have not needed to stop and actively seek information, feel out of their depth or find themselves at a dead end. This can be achieved by pausing at the end of each lesson, class or program and giving the user a number of options as to the next step they can take, ensuring that all options are a manageable step up from the current material or, if they are having difficulty with the material, an appropriate step down.

4. Facilitate More Than You Dictate
Contributors to the project should try their best to encourage collaboration, participation and engagement as much, if not more than they prescribe tasks and assessments. For example presentation of lesson information can be followed not only by a number of quiz questions and a task, but also a number of open ended questions on the discussion page that may insinuate contradiction of facts presented, or modifiable factors, or real world examples. To take this goal above and beyond, a contributor could prescribe an assessment piece that forces users to create their own criteria in a group or individual setting and in some way contributes back to the project.

5. Learn from Users
Take feedback and action it. Watch user activity and try to facilitate learning as much as possible. Take criticism and turn it into learning material, or modify some learning material to rectify the problem.

6. If You Can Do It Better, Do It!
If you have a better way of structuring the project, if you have a better way of delivering content, or if you have any way that contributes positively to User experience that contradicts or does not align with any of the goals, layouts or guides within the project, Do It. Don't be afraid to do something better if you know how, just don't forget to share your success stories with others on the discussion page!
