Human societies have been "typing" people in terms of their physiology and psychology for thousands of years. Typing allocates a person to single, discrete categories and is to be distinguished from the trait approach.
Greek humours
[edit | edit source]The ancient Greeks considered there to be four types of personality which was determined by excesses of different types of bodily fluids.
Humor | Fluid | Character |
---|---|---|
Choleric | yellow bile | Irritable |
Melancholic | black bile | Depressed |
Sanguine | blood | Optimistic |
Phlegmatic | phlegm | Calm |
