Activities[edit | edit source]

POGIL activities:[1]

Characteristics[edit | edit source]

POGIL activities are implemented using four core characteristics and four common attributes.[3]

The core characteristics of a POGIL implementation are:

  • students working collaboratively, typically in groups of 3 to 4 students
  • students using activities designed as POGIL activities
  • students working on the activity during class time
  • student-centered learning, with instructors as facilitators

The common attributes are:

  • students have assigned roles
  • activities are a first introduction to the topic
  • students are not expected to have any prior exposure to the subject
  • groups should be able to complete critical thinking questions during a 40 minute activity, but would work on exercises or problems later on their own

The elements of a typical POGIL activity include:[4]

  • Title
  • Overview
  • Prerequisites
