When adding to the site notice or changing it (but not when simply removing content), increment MediaWiki:Sitenotice id so that people who have dismissed the site notice will see the new topic. See here and here

Also, MediaWiki:Anonnotice exists, too.

alienating "others" ?

[edit source]

Erkan, "others" can be alienating. Consider alternatives such as "How would you describe Wikiversity to the unfamiliar". Hillgentleman|Talk 01:09, 31 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hello Hillgentleman, good idea. I will take your proposal until someone finds an even better sentence, ----Erkan Yilmaz uses the Wikiversity:Chat (try) 01:13, 31 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Fix

[edit source]

Voting on the closure of Beta Wikiversity (a multilingual project coordinating new non-English Wikiversities) is now open. -> It has been proposed (since Vasiliev doesn't like to be explicitly named; otherwise I would have preferred an active voice) that Beta Wikiversity (a multilingual project for coordination between wikiversities and for hosting new wikiversities) be closed. Hillgentleman|Talk 03:59, 16 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

I am not sure, you want that the message should be changed as you suggest after the symbol -> ? ----Erkan Yilmaz uses the Wikiversity:Chat (try) 16:18, 16 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
First of all, it sounds almost like it is "our" (ie the wikiversity community's, or whatever that means) proposal; secondly, the description "a multilingual project coordinating new non-English Wikiversities" is not accurate. So yes, please replace. Hillgentleman|Talk 17:02, 16 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Required correction

[edit source]

Registration for Wikimania 2008 has closed so please remove the section saying that "Registration for Wikimania 2008 is now open." Thanks, Anonymous101 talk 19:09, 16 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your awareness - removed, ----Erkan Yilmaz uses the Wikiversity:Chat (try) 19:11, 16 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, that was quick. Anonymous101 talk 19:12, 16 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Obsolete?

[edit source]

It seems like MediaWiki:Sitenotice id no longer needs to be updated to show new messages for people who have clicked dismiss the old message? --mikeu talk 02:53, 27 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

There is no sign in the manual that Sitenotice id is now unnecessary. As I read this, if someone has clicked "Dismiss," the site notice is not displayed even if it is edited, until Sitenotice id is bumped. --Abd (discusscontribs) 21:21, 22 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

dismiss

[edit source]

Hello, good news! Thanks to FreedomFighterSparrow and Brion, unregistered users can now hide the sitenotice again. Previously, they were forced to see it continuously.

In all cases, please use the sitenotice with care, and keep in mind that occasional visitors see sitenotices on all their visits, if they visit less than once a month or they don't click "dismiss" and save a cookie. Nemo 15:43, 24 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Updating the site id

[edit source]

@Mu301: about https://en.wikiversity.org/w/index.php?diff=2133989&oldid=2130531 - there is no reason to update the site id there, since anyone who saw and dismissed the prior message regarding both nominations now again sees the message about one of them (not reverting because the id cannot be reused) - it only needs to be bumped when there is something new --DannyS712 (discusscontribs) 02:07, 29 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

I don't mind this popping up again on sitenotice as the discussion seems to have stalled. A reminder might not be a bad idea even if it seems redundant. It might attract more attention to the discussion. --mikeu talk 02:14, 29 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
If it was intentional, then my apologies; just wanted to make sure the impact was clear --DannyS712 (discusscontribs) 02:19, 29 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
