The importance of assessment and maintenance of personal hygiene are essential components of the management of the ICU patient. Good quality and evidence based nursing care is part of a holistic approach that prevents unnecessary complications.

Assessment

Two levels of assessment need to be undertaken (Grealy & Chaboyer (2014).

  • Step 1ː To what level can the patient assist? Maintaining dignity and independence are vital parts of rehabilitation
  • Step 2ː The nurse's assessment of what care is actually required to maintain high standards.
