Intra-aortic Balloon Pump (IABP) Checklist

 Insertion Site
  • Femoral 
  • Dressing
  • Signs of swelling/bleeding
 Power Supply
 (2 sources)
  • Connect to mains power
  • Battery charge light 
 Helium
  • Check cylinder date/expiry
  • Ensure set to open
  • Check pressure status on console
  • Tubing clear (monitor for presence of blood)
 Mode
  • Autopilot or Operator
  • Check trigger
 ECG
  • ECG electrodes secure
 Arterial
  • Waveform (fibre optic, transducer, monitor)
 Timing
  • Assist ratio (1:1, 1:2, 1:4)
  • Waveform analysis
  • Print in 1:2 ratio for timing analysis
 Catheter
  • Size
  • Balloon volume
  • Skin catheter length
  • Check position on CXR 
 Alarms
  • Ensure on
  • Check arrhythmia timing
 Observations
  • 1 hourly IABP observations and recording
  • Vascular assesssment (doppler/ankle brachial index)
