MACHAE'RIUM (μαχαίριον, μαχαιρίς). Diminutive of MACHAERA. A fishmonger's knife (Plaut. Aul. ii. 9. 1.); surgeon's knife (Aristot. Gen. An. v. 8. 13.); barber's razor (Aristoph. Eq. 413.); all which senses imply a form of instrument similar to the one described and exhibited in the last article, and thus confirm the suggestion there made respecting its particular formation.
