CHIRUR'GUS (χειρουργός). A surgeon, who performs operations, as distinguished from a medical practitioner. The Roman doctor (medicus) of early times exercised both departments of the healing art; but, about the time of Tiberius, surgery began to be practised as a distinct profession. Cels. Praef. vii. Becker, Gallus, p. 224. transl.
